Reading Assignment: Read Chapters 9-11, pp. 130-180 of The 0utsiders

Writing Assignment: In the fire scene, all three boys, Dally, Pony Boy, and Johnny behave in a way most people consider “heroic.” Write a paragraph or to two that answers these questions? What is it that motivates their acts of extreme courage? Why are they willing to risk their lives to save another? Is the motivation the same for all three. Please remember to (2) open by introducing the title of the book along with the author and (2) mention incidents and/or statements from the book that support your point of view.

In the book the OutSiders, S.E.Hinton creates three characters, Dally, Pony Boy, and Johnny. They saved children in the fire. I think something pushed them to do this. Because they don’t want to see anyone died because of them. They killed Bob, because of this, they hide. They must cut their hair. They know how much pain the others will feel after those children die. These may be Dally and Johnny’s reason. For Pony Boy, I think he is young and kind. He loves the lives.

Yes, yes, exactly right. The two boys saved the children because they believed they caused the fire and did not want to be the cause of the children dying in the fire. And "young and kind" is a very good phrase to describe Pony Boy. I will e-mail you some additional comments, but I like your last sentence; it sounds like the line of a song.

In S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, In the fire scene, all three boys, Dally, Pony Boy, and Johnny behave in a way most people consider "heroic". They saved the kids from the fire in the church even they got badly hurt. They are really brave. But I think the motivation of doing that is Ponyboy and Johnny thought their cigarettes started the fire so they thought they would have more accusations in court. And making the children in danger shames them a lot. So they decided to save the children to atonement for doing that. And Dally helped the two boys just because their brother asked him to protect the two boys.

The smoothness of your writing in this assignment is very impressive. I like how these two sentences work together with the second clarifying the first:

"In S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, In the fire scene, all three boys, Dally, Pony Boy, and Johnny behave in a way most people consider "heroic". They saved the kids from the fire in the church even they got badly hurt."

And then you follow your longer sentences with a short one that punches your point home (idiom means that you have said something very clearly and well): They are really brave.

I am also deeply impressed by your perfectly correct use of the word "atonement." REALLY WELL DONE!
