In S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, In the fire scene, all three boys, Dally, Pony Boy, and Johnny behave in a way most people consider "heroic". They saved the kids from the fire in the church even they got badly hurt. They are really brave. But I think the motivation of doing that is Ponyboy and Johnny thought their cigarettes started the fire so they thought they would have more accusations in court. And making the children in danger shames them a lot. So they decided to save the children to atonement for doing that. And Dally helped the two boys just because their brother asked him to protect the two boys.
