Reading Assignment:  Read pages 1-30 of Sadako and the Thousand Paper Dresses

Writing Assignment : Write a  plot summary of The Big Wave. Limit the summary to one or two paragraphs. Use the fictional present tense to describe the events in the story.

Remember the 3rd person singular almost always ends in s. Here's a partial summary to give you an idea of how you should go about completing the assignment:

Pearl Buck's The Big Wave tells the story of Jiya and Kino, two young boys who spend their days swimming and fishing.  Jiya is the son of a fisherman while Kino is the son of a farmer, and that makes a huge difference in their lives when the big wave hits the shore.

Hi Cindy, It's very good that you covered the main events, and in almost every sentence correctly used the present tense. I would be even more pleased if I could get you to write just a little bit more. But you have an excuse, it being your birthday celebration and all.

I will send you some comments via e-mail before the class arrives.

Hello,Laraine

Pearl Buck's The Big Wave tells the story of Jiya and Kino, two young boys who spend their days swimming and fishing.  Jiya is the son of a fisherman while Kino is the son of a farmer, and that makes a huge difference in their lives when the big wave hits the shore. Jiya's family lose in the sea,,Jiya has  alive. The old Gentleman wants Jiya to be his son,but Jiya says:"No!"So,Jiya lives with Kino's family.A few years after,Jiya and Kino grow to young men,Setsu grows to a young woman,Jiya marrys with Setsu, and they live together.

Hi Enya, This is lovely. I like very much the way you used a transition "A few years after" to link the last two sentences together. I also  like the repetition of patterns in the second to last sentence  "Jiya and Kino grow [to be] young men, Setsu grows to [be] a young woman." That kind of conscious repetition is what skilled writers do.  I will e-mail you some further comments. Thank you for contributing.  Laraine
