Reading Assignment: Please read pp.1-38 in Island of the Blue Dolphins.

Writing Assignment: Please write 1 to 3 paragraphs that point out the similarities and/or differences between the transformation Jess in Bridge to Terabithia and Stanley in Holes undergo. However, don't just point out how the  changes in the two boys are different or similar. Make sure to include a general sentence that summarizes the changes, for instance.  "Jess in Bridge to Terabithia and Stanley in Holes, both undergo a powerful transformation in personality. However, they are changed in  dramatically (powerfully) different ways."

You may decide, as you think about the change or changes, that the boys are transformed in similar ways. If that's the case, then y our general statement would be different of course. You can include the general summary statement either  in the beginning, the middle, or the end of the paragraph or paragraphs.

Here is Mark's assignment for this week:

Jess in Bridge to Terabithiaand Stanley in Holes, both undergo a powerful transformation in personality. At first, Jess and Stanley are weak. They have to deal with bullies and do not have friends. Their families are poor. And they are unhappy every day. But after some time, both of them underwent a huge change.

Jess has a good friend, Leslie and she was happy and imaginative most times. She also made Jess happy and imaginative. Although she died at last, but she still changed Jess's personality and life.Stanley made friend with Zero in the Green Lake Camp. He taught Zero read and write. Digging holes makes Stanley strong. Stanley and Zero helped each other so they're much happier. They also found the big box of jewels and became very rich.

Stanley and Jess are same happy after they underwent a transformation. But Stanley's family became rich but Jess's family still have to work so hard.

Both in Bridge To Terabithia and Holes which has the similiar character Jess and Stanley. Firstly, they are students who are afraid of the bullies at the school. Secondly, they both live in poor families, and unable to make friends.

In Bridge To Terabithia, at first, Jess was a week and unhelpful person, but sence he met Leslie, who is a new student, he became more imaginative and friendly. In Holes, at first, I just think Stanley is a big and 'stupid' child, but sence he went to Green Lake Camp and met his friends, they made him become friendly and helpful, just like Stanley teachs Zero to read and write.

Both the stories have a happy ending, but Jess's family still need to work hard to earn money, but Stanley's family became rich.

Here is Alice's response to the assignment:

Here is Cindy's assignment:

Jess in Bridge to Terabithia and Stanley in Holes, both undergo a powerful transformation in personality. Though the whole book, the two characters are all has some cause to undergo a big change.

Jess has a big transformation because of a person. It’s because of Leslie come into his life. Leslie come into his life, make friend with him, chat with him, and build the Terabithia with him. Then she change Jess’ whole life and make him become optimistic.

Stanley has a big transformation because of a matter that he seems to have stolen the shoes. It’s different as Jess’ transformation, but  in the beginning, they all have a big trouble on social contact, then someone or something make them different.

Hi Cindy, I like seeing you using words we have discussed in class, like optimistic. And you are certainly correct to identify Leslie as the source of Jess's transformation. It's interesting, too, that you have identified the general problem both  boys have, an inability to handle social contact. I think that is quite right.
