Writing Assignment: Write a character description of the warden.  What is she like in general terms?  For the opening sentence, make sure you use at least two adjectives that tell the reader something about the warden’s personality and behavior (See some possibilities below).  Then provide some specific details from the book to  show why you have described her character in this way.

Some words that describe her: demanding, high-handed, dictatorial, overbearing,  iron-willed, strict, tyrannical. harsh, hard-hearted, bossy

Warden is one of a  initiator the Green Lake Camp. She is cold, unbending and especially have never forgive anyone. 'Excuse me! Excuse me!' Warden said it to Mr. Sir, we can all see her selfish and arrogancy heart. But all the times she is hiding herself, and be 'nice' to the childrens. In the office, she even said ‘He is not going to die, unfortunately for you.' Srict, mean, and unbending woman, that's what I think about Warden.

Ah Alice, I think you don't like the Warden. Well neither do I, for exactly the reasons you describe, She is cold, unbending and unforgiving.  And I agree that when anyone dares to offer an opinion that doesn't agree with hers, the reader gets to see her arrogant heart. I like that you are using quotations from the book. The match between the quotations and what you say about it really shows how well you understand what you are reading.

In the book Holes the warden of the Green Lake camp is a really tyrannical and scary lady. She downed Mr Sir with only one slap and she made him disfigured and Stanley did not dare to tell other boys the truth. She's also a dictatorial lady. After she came to the Green Lake camp, Mr Sir and Mr Pendanski both gave way to her, but she still is always be rude to them. When they tried to make some suggestions to her, she always interrupt them with a useful word for her:"Excuse me! Excuse me!" And only let them to do what she want them to do.

I think she is really strong and scary, but she should be nicer to the others and then people will more like her.

Mark, This is totally fabulous. You have a nice smooth introduction, used the word "tyrannical" perfectly,  and chose exactly the right incidents from the book to illustrate why you would call the Warden "tyrannical" and "scary." You even have a nice strong conclusion that wraps up the paragraph.  I have a few comments to make via e-mail. But this is extraordinarily impressive!!!

Hello,Laraine

In the book Holes, the Warden in it is very tyrannical and she only cares about what she wants and never cares about others. When Group D first find the gold tube, she is very interesting on it and nice to them.(Because she wants them to find more gold tubes to let her have much money.) But day by day, they still don't find the thing she wants. She starts to lose her patiens and she gets worse and worse with children. One day whem she sees Armpit has a very short break to go to the washroom, she even stabs Armpit's back with her pitchfork! She only thinks they should find what she wants. But she never cares how tired the children are! When they can't find the things she wants, she even hurts them!

How  tyrannical and uncompassionate the Warden is!

In the book 'HOLES',I think the warden is a harsh woman. She is always be strict to the boys, because she wants the precious thing in the Green Lake. But I think she is care about the boys, like she believes Stanley didn’t steal that money. But she is too much care about the thing she wants, so it makes she become more demanding and high-handed. And also, she is overbearing. When she talks to Dr. Pendanski, she always interrupts him and says ‘Excuse me’. Its makes me think she is more bossy.

@ Enya, Excellent choice of an adjective to describe the Warden. And your illustration of how she only cares about others is excellent. I like too your use of the transition "day by day." Very nice! Equally good is your illustration of how she loses her patience.  The woman is definitely a tyrant at heart as your choice of detail from the text shows. Very well done!!
