Writing Assignment: Chocolate plays a big role in the book we are reading, obviously. But it also plays, at least in the U.S., a big role in real life, rather than just fiction. And chocolate is not a new invention by any means. It has a history. It's the history I'd like you to write about, using some techniques we have been talking about in relation to writing. Those would be the use of transitions along with general and specific statements.
I will be sending you a list of dates and events about the invention and growing enjoyment of chocolate. You are to put them into a smoothly written paragraph that opens with a general statement (See below) and then lists--another word for lists is "chronicles"--the rise of chocolate as a popular snack-- rather than nourishment, no matter what the mother of August Gloop claims. What follows is a short example of what I want you to do. Note the underlined transitions a long with a sample sentence pattern, I'd like you to try.
Although ice cream machines are a fairly recent invention, ice cream itself has been with us for a very long time. (General statement that then gets specifically defined) In the 13th century, the explorer Marco Polo returned to Italy from his travels to Asia. He brought with him a recipe for a delicious dessert that resembled sherbet (a kind of ice cream made with water, not cream). By the 16th century, Marco Polo's recipe had undergone some changes and become what we today call ice cream. In the same century, the recipe traveled to England and France, becoming popular at the dinner tables of the wealthy. By the 17th century, ice cream was known all over Europe and had become the favorite treat of the general public.
