Reading Assignment: Read pages 1-34 inCharlie and the Chocolate Factory

Writing Assignment (Pick one of the three):

Assignment 1 (This is different from what we discussed in class. I think it's better.)

In Charlotte's Web, Wilbur often talks about how cozy (warm and comfortable) the barn was. Write a paragraph describing what you think made the barn an inviting place (for Wilbur anyway). Open with a general statement about the barn, something like (but not the same as) "The barn in Charlotte's Web is, for both Wilbur and Charlotte,a place of great comfort" or else "It's hard to imagine a cozier place than the barn in E.B. White's book Charlotte's Web." Then, using what you have learned from White, describe in concrete and specific detail what makes the barn inviting (a happy, pleasant place). When you walk in it, what do you see, hear, or smell that makes the barn a happy home for Wilbur and Charlotte and the rest of the animals?

Assignment 2. Write a paragraph that answers the question posed here:

The idea of an intimate friendship is central to Charlotte’s Web.  It’s a subject  that White clearly wants to talk about.  But why didn’t he just make Wilbur’s friend another pig? Why did he choose to make Wilbur’s best friend a spider, when everyone knows that spiders are not the prettiest of creatures? Why is it important to the story that Wilbur’s best friend and savior be a spider?  To help you get started, remember some of the things Cindy said in class.

Assignment 3. Write a paragraph explaining which character most resemblesE.B. White's thinking when he was asked why he wrote Charlotte's Web“ I haven’t told why I wrote the book, but I haven’t told why I sneeze either. A book is a sneeze. “

In the paragraph, explain why you chose the character or characters you believe share White's attitude?  That means, of course, that you have to explain what White's attitude is first.  If you are having trouble getting started, remember what Mark and Enya said in class.

    I picked assignment 2.

In the book Charlotte's web, Wilbur, the pig's best friend is Charlotte, the spider but not a pig. Why she isn't a pig, too? Spider is not so pretty and it is so small and not special. I think because A pig can not make a web and write words on it. And maybe the author wants to tell people average person can do great thing and tell people different kinds of people can become friends.

Hello, Laraine

     I pick  assignment 3.

White likes writing, so he writes Charlotte's web and many great books. He just does what he wants to do. He doesn't have any reason. I think Charlotte shares White's attitde. She just helps Wilbur and safes Wilbur's lif, but she doesn't have reason. Just for safe Wilbur, just for help him. She just loves Wilbur. She won't get any bad happen if she not safe Wilbur, but she still did it. I think it's because she has a kind heart. Like White writes those books is not for money and fame. He has a heart that loves writing.

@Mark,

I agree with every one of your reasons. Charlotte needed to be a spider for the plot. I can't think of another animal or insect that can be seen as able to write. But I also agree that her being a spider is important to the theme. White wants readers to realize that friendships don't have to be based on similarity. Like Charlotte and Wilbur, people who are very different can become friends.

I also think he wants us to realize that ordinary beings can be quite extraordinary if you observe them closely.  So we agree on that score too.

I will send you some additional comments via e-mail.

@ Enya,

That's a very interesting response. From White's quote about books being like a sneeze, I think it is safe to say he thinks writing books doesn't require a reason. Sometimes people just want to write them.

But don't you think that saving Wilbur's life is a reason for helping him? So I'm not sure that she is like White in that respect.

I totally love the last two lines of your paragraph, especially that final sentence, "He has a heart that loves writing." That is a perfectly beautiful thought  expressed in a perfectly lovely sentence.

I will send you additional comments via e-mail.

I pick the frist one It's hard to imagine a cozier place than the barn in E.B. White's book Charlotte's Web. In Charlotte’s Web, the coziest place is the barn. When you walk beside of the barn, you can smell the warm smell of hay. Then the smell will lend you into the barn. When you walk into the door, the spider that lives on the door will use her web to say hello to you, she is Charlotte. After you say hello to Charlotte, there will come a little pig that name is Wilbur. He will bring you into the barn and show you what in the barn. First you will feel really warm, because all the animals are indoors. But when in summer, the big doors stood wide open to the breeze, you will feel pleasantly cool. Then you will see the barn had stalls on the main floor for the horses, tie-ups on the main floor the cows, a sheepfold down below for the sheep, a pigpen down below for Wilbur, and it was full of all sorts of things that you find in the barn. You can see all the animals live and work in peace and contentment. Maybe the rat Templeton will make some trouble in the barn, but that only make everybody be more happy.
