Reading Assignments: For next week please read Rumpelstiltskin and Little Red Riding Hood,  which I  sent via two separate e-mails. I am attaching them here as well just in case you did not get the e-mails and have access to the forum.

They are both short, so  please start Many Moons, pages 2-10.
The book has no page numbers. So consider the very first page as 1 (both sides). Page 2 would be the page with the castle drawing on it. Page 3 would be on the back of page 2. The page beginning "The King flew into a rage ...." would be page 10.

Writing assignment: Please write a version of Lon Po Po from the point of  the wolf. You can make him seem meaner or nicer than he is in the story. Here is an example of what I mean using The Wolf and the Seven Kids. I have made him nicer. But you can also make him meaner.

Even as a much younger wolf, I never had many friends. I had to spend all my time alone. I hated it. Then one day I saw seven young goats playing on the grass. They looked like they were having a great time. I wanted to join them and be their friend. So I hung around their house. I was waiting for their mother to leave because I know goats don't usually like wolves and she would not want them to be friends with me. When she left. I knocked on the door, but the kids wouldn't let me in. I had to pretend I was their mother to get in.

When I got in the house, they were scared at first. But I made it clear that I wanted to be their friend and play because I was lonely. We all went outside and were playing ball. It was great I was so happy. But then their nasty mother came home and stabbed me in the stomach because she thinks all wolves are bad.  She almost killed me, and I barely recovered.

To disguise what she had done, she spread all those stories about my eating her kids and needing to cut open my stomach to get them out. They  are all lies. She is the bad one, not me. If there is a villain in the story, it's that woman, who thinks all wolves are bad and should be killed.

We did not get to discuss the Brothers Grimm and what they did. We will start with that next week, right after we finish talking about the differences between Lon Po Po and The Wolf and  the Seven Kids.

How does the story differ from Lon Po Po? Do the differences change the point?
Is there a hero in this story?

Alfonso's writing assignment:

Lon Po Po from a wolf’s point of view

When I was still alive, I was a lonely wolf, living alone with no family and no friends. People did not like wolves very much. They thought wolves are bad animals, but I was kind, always wanting to make friends with young kids. However, every time I went near a village, people were always scared, screaming, fleeing, or shooting me with their terrible guns.

There’s a family living near my forest, with three children and a mother. One day, I saw the mother went out, leaving the children alone at home. I thought this was a lucky chance for me to make friends with the children. However, I did not want to scare them, so I disguised as an old woman and pretended to be their Po Po. Unfortunately, they discovered that I was a wolf. They set me up, tricking me into believing that they wanted to help me get up to a tree, eventually killing me.

I think people are very evil. They did not know I just wanted to make friends with them. They killed me simply because I was a wolf. That was not fair. Being a wolf was not my fault. If I can choose, I want to be a dog, so kids will like to play with me.  But if I am still born as a wolf in my next life, I will not befriend human beings. In fact, I think I will stay away from them as much as possible because people are as cunning as foxes.

This is wonderful. Every sentence is a jewel (vocabulary word). But my favorite lines are about wishing he were a dog and people being as cunning as foxes. Your writing really made me feel, "Oh that poor wolf," and that's the highest praise a reader can give--that the writer made the people or situation described come to life.

Here is Jackie's assignment. He still cannot get on the forum:

During the sunset, I heard a voice of someone’s footstep coming from the house, and wanted to know what three children and their mother were doing. I saw the mother holding a basket on her hand and said to the three children: “I’m going to your grandmother’s house, because today is her birthday. I can’t come back at night, and don’t open the door for stranger.”

I thought I could go to their house and help them cooking dinner, but if they knew I was a wolf, I have to dress up their po po and they would let me in.

During the dark, I came to the house, and knocked the door: “My little jewels.” I said, “this is your grandmother, your po po.” and Shang said:” po po, po po, come in.” I entered the house. The three children were surprised, and I said to them: “Don’t be afraid, children.” But the children didn’t believe me, and said: “There some gingko nuts on the tree, if you   eat, you will live forever.” “Oh, that’s great, but I don’t know how to climb the tree, can you help me to get it?” “We can’t do that. You should get it yourself, or the gingko nuts won’t work.” “That’s very bad, I think I have to get a basket and a rope, and you three can pull me up.” “It’s a good idea! Hurry up. ”

I sat into the basket, he children used the the rope to pull me up. First time, Shang pulled me up, and let go of the rope, “I am very hurt, why did you let go of the rope.” I said. “I can’t pull you up, I am not strong enough. “ This time, two of us will hold the rope and you will not fall again.” Then they did the same thing as the last time, I fell again. But the third time, they pull me so high that they let the rope go of again, I fell down and was died finally.

Jackie, This is just great. You made the wolf so sweet, just a creature (new vocabulary word) trying to help the children cook dinner.  I like, too, that you included dialogue. And you are very good at using quotation marks.  Nice, too, that you used the word "jewels," the way the wolf does in the story. Excellent work! Thank you. LMF
