Reading and Writing Assignments for 4/21/15

Alfonso's assignment

I have read lots of fairy tales. My favorite one is “Lon Po Po”, the story of three children killed a wolf which trespassed their house and disguised itself as the children’s grandmother. I like this story because it teaches me a lot of things. First, it teaches me to observe things carefully and pay attention to details. In the story of “Lon Po Po”, only Shang discovered that Po Po was actually a wolf because she observed Po Po carefully since Po Po entered their door. The story also tells me that when you get into trouble, you have to stay calm and think how to get help or help yourself. When Shang knew there was a wolf in her house, she did not feel nervous but thought how to be safe. Shang let her younger sister and brother climb up the tree with her for better protection. Then, she told the wolf to get into the basket and killed the wolf by dropping the basket from high above. The story also teaches me don’t open the door for strangers because if you do, you might get into trouble like the children in the story of “Lon Po Po”. 

I think the children in the story are all smart and brave. If there is a wolf in my house, I will be very scared. I think the wolf is tricky, because it disguises itself as the children’s grandmother and tricks the children to open the door so it can enter the house and eat them. The wolf lies to people in the story. But, unfortunately, unlike Pinocchio, the wolf’s nose does not get longer when it lies, so we do not know if a wolf is lying or not.

Hi Alfonso, It's Sunday morning here, and I was just in a bad mood because I have to work. But then I opened up my e-mail and read your wonderful explanation. I immediately cheered up.

This is just great. What's amazing is that you already know what many American graduate (that's after college) students don't know, that when you offer an opinion in writing, you support it with proof or evidence from the book, in this case the story.

I will send you some further comments via e-mail. But this is an excellent piece of work.  And I particularly like your ending where you cleverly describe the Wolf's advantage when he lies. Yes, it's too bad, all liars didn't have noses that would grow when they told an untruth.  Best, L.

In a fairy tale, we learned a lot of stories. But Rapuzles of best one. Have a large content of philosophic theory be intensely interesting.

Rapuzle is talk about: witch take princess deviate from her parents, but is kind of princess, like mother ,every day comp hair for her. When princess was 18,she want saw star, but it was in the opposition, because she didn’t want she know the true. Who take her go? Yes the prince in order to take bake diadem, his promise take her saw star prince first time go exterior was very excite , to everything was curiosity. Originally he is thief，but his save princess. In the end they get marry, happiness．

Rapuzle want it to tell us: matter outside good or bad, you just do you self. Inward is beautiful, is imagine, is happy memories, has lofty ideal are good, you world are substantial.

Wow Shirley you have some impressive vocabulary here. I think many Americans would not know what a diadem, or crown, was. I am glad that you found 

Rapunzel "intensely interesting."  And I agree that "inward is beautiful" when it consists of "happy memories." No wonder you like philosophy. You are a bit of a philosopher yourself.   Laraine

 Of the fairy tales , we have read such as “Lon Po Po”, “Many moons”, “The wolf and seven kids” act . The fairy tales that my favorite more is “Little red riding hood”.the wonderful of that a little girl who was called “Little red riding hood” was going to see her old grandmother who was ill and weak with a bottle of wine and a piece of cake. When she entered the wood she met a wolf. The wolf act kindness then eat the Little red riding hood’s grandmother and her .Finally , the hunter helped them and killed the bad wolf , they all were safe .I like it because it teaches us much useful knowledge: when you walk by yourselves then met somebody  which are you never met before this and if he has some question for you, you must not tell him anything,such as what is your name?, who is your mom ?where is your house ? what’s your phone number ect ? What’s your mother said to you always are good for you . It can give us a lot of questions to think and find new things which all are big surprise for you ,such as what the Little red riding hood’s mother tell her? After this , where will the hunter go maybe? 

Well, I agree with you completely Else, the story does offer "much useful knowledge," especially when you are out and about and a stranger comes near.

I love how you mention the specific questions the stranger might ask. "Little Red Riding Hood" wasn't one of my favorites before. But after reading what you wrote, it just might be.

Of the fairy tales, we have read, my favorite is “Rumpelsiltskin”, the story of a queen think of how to find out the little man’s name in order to keep her children. I like it because Rumpelstiltskin was very good and honest, but he was a little crafty. The queen was good at thinking hard and she was so clear-headed that no one can defeat her. This is why she can keep her children.

Very well written! And extremely clear, you followed the directions exactly and used a great vocabulary word too, "crafty."  I have read the fairy tale many times. It's also one of my favorites. However, I never thought of Rumpelstiltskin as "honest." But you are exactly right. He tells the queen exactly what he wants from the very beginning. Nice work, Jackie!
