Reading Assignment pp.3-47: Holes

Writing Assignment: Describe how Bridge to Terabithia ends. Take a few sentences to do this. Explain how Leslie came to be alone and what happened to her. Then explain what that sad ending means in terms of Jess’s development. Does he feel sad and guilty? Or does he feel that, in some way, Leslie's spirit is still with him?

At the end of the book Bridge to Terabithia, Leslie drowned in the river to Terabithia because the rope is not enough solid and it snaped. Jess was very sad, so he build a wooden bridge over the river and there won't be dangerous anymore.  His sister May Belle and he became friends.

Before Leslie met Jess she does not have any friends to play with. Her classmates think she is a weirdo and she is an outsider of them except Jess.

Although Leslie is an outsider of the class, but she is not sad, she's still happy. She also made her best friend, Jess happy and she teached him to open his mind. She is like an angel came into Jess's life and just for change him and then she will go away.

When Leslie passed away, of course Jess is so sad. But Jess will become more strong and more happy when he face the difficulty and he won't give up. In some way, Leslie's spirit is still with him.

This end for the book is not perfect, but I think it is beautiful, isn't it?

Here is Alice's response:

In the end of ‘Bridge To Terabithia ’, Leslie drowned in the lake and died. But it didn’t influence Jess from keeping Terabithia exist. What’s more, he took May Belle over the wooden bridge which he built, and makes her the princess of Terabithia.

At first, Leslie came to Jess’s school is because she doesn’t have any friends in the old school, her parents wants her to make friends in this new school, and she knew Jess.

But Jess didn’t get disheartened, he still creates things and likes to help others, he even made friend with Janice Avery! That’s all because Leslie’s spirit is still with him.

Although I think the ending of the story is sorrowful, but it is beautiful and wonderful ending!

@ Mark   You really nailed the meaning of the story (idiom meaning understood it exactly right) when you said that despite her death, Leslie is still with him. And I think you are right too about Jess becoming stronger once he  is able to overcome his sadness at Leslie's death. You have excellent insights (thoughts) about the story. Nice work! Laraine

@ Alice

I agree with you; the story is very sad but it is also beautiful and wonderful, particularly because it teaches such important lessons about life. I also think you have really understood the lessons it was meant to teach. I will e-mail you some additional comments, but for now, I am very  impressed with your understanding of the book.

The end of the story 'Bridge to Terabithia' is Leslie dead. I think Leslie’s dead is not just ‘dead’. She come and help Jess on his life, then when she finish what she have to do, she gone. It’s seems like a fairy tale. An angle comes and helps the little boy with his big trouble. When the angle finishes her work, she leaves. Leslie can’t stay with Jess forever. Jess must walk the life road by himself. I think the writer wants to tell the readers are: Parents, friends, or teachers, they can’t stay with you forever. You must stand by yourself. Even they really give you a big help or you really can’t leave them.

Hello,Laraine

I think it is a sad ending. When Jess is happy with Miss Edmunds in Washington, Leslie goes to Terabithia alone. But when she cross the stream with the rope, the rope broken and Leslie fall in the river and died!

Before Leslie comes in Jess's life, Jess is a odd boy at school and he doesn't have any friends. When Leslie goes in his life, he becomes braver and compassionate. Leslie is his first friend. The same ,Jess is Leslie's first friend too because almost everyone thinks Leslie is not a good girl except Jess.

But Leslie died. It makes Jess  crazy at first. He really miss Leslie. Jess build a wood bridge to Terabithia after Leslie fall from the rope. He doesn't want anyone more fall into the stream. Before Leslie died, Jess always follows her and does what she wants to do. Now Jess becomesa really king of Terabithia. He has himself to thinks things. Jess grows up from Leslie's die.

@ Cindy, What a lovely interpretation (understanding of the story's meaning)! You are right; it is like a fairy tale, where for a short while, an angel comes to provide help to someone in need.  And I just love the metaphor you used of Jess walking the road of life by himself after Leslie's death. This is just wonderful!! I also think your idea of the story's moral is exactly right. Fabulous job here, Cindy!

@ Enya.

Wow! You really understood this story in depth (in great detail).  I know a lot of American readers who would not get as much out of the story as you did.  I like, too, how you organized (set out)your thoughts, starting with a general statement about the book having a sad ending, then describing, more specifically, why it was sad.

And the way you used that short sentence to open the third paragraph is just a knock out.  It really makes the reader sit up and take notice, which is exactly what you want.

Your saying how Jess really becomes the King of Terebithia after Leslie died is exactly right. It's a perfect reading (understanding) of the book's  ending and its overall message. Very, very impressive!
