Reading Assignment: Read pages 63-93 in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Writing Assignment: Roald Dahl, the author of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory carefully builds Charlie’s character through both his words and deeds. Please explain, first, what kind of person you think Dahl wants Charlie to become in his readers’ minds. Then explain what language and/or incidents from the book made you see Charlie  in this way.  Preferably use both: statements in the book that Charlie makes along with incidents that reveal his character.

Please avoid using vague and general adjectives or nouns to describe Charlie. Look for nouns and adjectives that say something specific,  Charlie is a caring person; Charlie is affectionate; Charlie shows empathy for others; Charlie is compassionate; Charlie has integrity and so on. What I want you to avoid are opening statements like Charlie is a nice boy or Charlie is a good boy.

Hello,Laraine

I think Dahl wants Charlie to become a compassionate boy. When Charlie's family are starve, Charlie's parens want to give their food o Charlie. But Charlie knows that they are hungry to. So even Charlie is hungry and needs more nourishment, he still didn't eat them and give them back to his parents. I think Charlie is lucky, too. The other four children that got the Golden Ticket are all rich and bought a lots of Wonka's Candy. Only Charlie is poor, he just bought four Candies (One was his birthday present. One was his grandfather took a gamble. Two are he bought by the money he picked on the ground.)and he got the last Goleden Ticket.

I think Charlie is a sensible and humble kid, when he had his birthday chocolate, he knew that his family are all hungry. So he knew that he should make his family be not hungry, too and wanted to give a part of his chocolate to his granparent. So although he is not really rich even don't have enough for eating, he is still the happiest kid in the children can go into the chocolate factory. Maybe the god likes the good boy like Charlie, too. So he only bought four chocolate then get a golden ticket.

Charlie, the main character in Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the chocolate factory. In my thought, Charlie is a boy who is poor but he can seek his dream. Even the dream really won’t come true. In the story, when Charlie know about the golden ticket , he try to use all ways to find the golden ticket to go to the chocolate factory. And in the midst of Charlie finding the golden ticket, he lost thrice. But he isn’t stop, he is still finding. Charlie never lost his belief to find the ticket. And at last he really find it and go to the factory. ‘where there is a will there is a way.’
