Hello Class!  I look forward to our first 2-hour session this Friday night (China time).  Here's what you must do before we meet next Friday:

1.  Make sure you have read both the article on Columbus (last class assignment) and this link on "Colonial-Indian Relations" (http://www.let.rug.nl/usa/outl...indian-relations.php) before next class.

2:  Answer the following questions on the forum  with 2-5 sentences for each.  Please feel free to insert quotes from the reading to help support your answers:

A-What was Christopher Columbus's first impression of the Arawak Indians?

B-Do you think American's should celebrate Columbus Day?  Why or why not?

C-How did the early European settlers benefit from their relationship with the Native Americas?  In other words, how did the Native American tribes help them when they were settling into North America?

Please answer these questions on the forum in complete sentences and make sure you have read both readings carefully before next class. We will spend a lot of time discussing these readings and learning more about early settlements in American as well as Indian-Colonist relations.

A- When Columbus first reached the Bahamas, Arawak Indians were so welcoming and unaware of the potential dangers these visitors brought. Columbus thought of them as ignorant and naive. The Indians cut themselves with the knives and were seduced as slaves so easily.

B- I think Americas should celebrate Columbus Day. Columbus' inhumane act of killing and enslaving Indians ought to be condemned, but his discovery of the new continent was like a rebirth to this ancient and sleeping land. Since the very old days, the world have been a place where only the fittest survive.  The ancient Egyptian people were killed by Romans and Greeks. Their civilization were lost. But today, we still treat the Romans and Greeks with a positive attitude.  In my personal opinion, Columbus is overall praise-worthy for his bravery and contribution to the world.

C- I think probably the biggest benefit the European settlers get from the Native Americans is labor. Traveled across the Atlantic by sea, the Europeans were exhausted. The naive and armless Indians were easy to comply to the Europeans. Like mentioned in the article:"They would make fine servants... With 50 men we could subjugate them all and make them do whatever we want." Indians could help Europeans to dig gold, to produce food and to do many other things.

B:NO because he is kill thousand of people even he is find america. When the Arawaks could not produce enough gold, he cut off the hands of all those 14 years and older, and enslaved them on estates where they were worked to death. The most horrific reports came from a young priest, Bartolomé de Las Casas, who wrote, “The Spaniards think nothing of knifing Indians by tens and twenties and of cutting slices off them to test the sharpness of their blades.” He wrote of two Christians who met up with two Arawak boys and beheaded them for fun.

this shows that he is evil powerful. I think we shouldn't celebrate to a person who is killed thousand of people
