For homework, please read the first chapter of The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes.

Answer the following question about the Hundred Penny Box:

Very often, we keep certain objects or possessions to remind us of something or someone from the past. In The Hundred Penny Box, we found the themes of “holding on” to the past, the way that Aunt Dew does, and “letting go” the way that Michael’s mother, Ruth, tries to.  Ruth thinks that Aunt Dew should forget her past in order to be happy in life. What do you think of this? Is it more important to forget about bad things or things in the past, or to remember them?  Please write at least one paragraph.

Then, please translate the first two pages of Ch. 1 "Usually Wanda...on the floor" into Chinese on a separate piece of paper.

I think we should remember things in the past. A celebrity said that looking back upon the past make you live again. Memories are important for a man, a family, even a country. Bad things in the past make us grateful. When we look back upon the happy things in the past, we will be pleased. If we did something wrong in the past, we should remember them so that we won't do the wrong things again. Remember things in the past doesn't make us live in a old world and never look forward. Instead, we can live better if we remember the things.

I think it is more important to forget about bad things in the past. Because sometimes the bad memories make you be afraid. For example, a man lost her girlfriend in the past, then he did not find a new one anymore. Is that good for him? Of course not. So we need to let them go and throw off the feeling of failure. WhenI was 5 years old, I started to learn riding bike with my father. But I fell over everytime. I felt pain and didn't want to ride it anymore. My father taught me,' don't be afraid, forget the pain keep trying.' I didn't understand it very well, but when I forget the pain, I became brave. At last, I got the picture of riding bike. So I think it is more important to f orget about the bad things than remember it.
