For class, please read chapters 11 and 12 (pages 161-180).  In order to finish the book, please also go back to any chapters or places in the story you didn't understand, and take time to reread them and understand them.

Then, write an essay answering this prompt, using at least 200 words:

“Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn” (p.93).

Discuss this quote from the novel and how it applies to each of the boy’s lives. What things have they learned? What things might they have liked to learn? Support your ideas with what you know about the characters through examples from the novel.

Last, come up with 2 discussion questions to share with the class. Think of questions that may have more than one answer.

See you next week!

James' Homework:

My opinion of:Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn.

I think this sentence means a person live in a society will be influenced gradually. Although someting they do not want to learn, they'll still get into the habit of doing them, day in and day out, they''ll be used to it and it will hardly be changed. There was a great thinker called Mengzi (a grest thinker who was influenced by Confucius' ideas). When he was a child, he lived near a cemetery, he often saw people cry and do things like sweeping tombs, and he followed them. His mother saw it and move to another place. The second place they move is nearby a market. Mengzi saw people shout at each other and followed. His mother saw it and moved to another place again. The third time they move nearby the slaughter house, Menzi followed the way people kill pigs. At last, Menzi's mom move nearby a school, and this time he follow the students there and become a famous and successful thinker in the end. So, if a person want to learn something good, he'd better move or live in a good palace. Instead, he'll be learn many bad things and become a bad person in the end.

Shirley's Homework:

I think this sentence are applies to each of boy `s lives, because in the people around 16 years old is the period of adolescent. They always learn some bad or good things from other peoples. Also, in this sentence they just talk to the streets, but the wrong things maybe also learn from other place or people. If there are learn from streets, they might be learn some wrong things that they don`t know is wrong things. Maybe they learn some wrong things, such as how to smoke; how have a girlfriend; how to didn`t be honest to people. But I think most things have two different sides. They learn some wrong things from streets and they also learn some good things from the streets. They can make real friends from that they learn from streets that experience they have. The real friends just like Johnny and pony boy. When pony boy in the hospital, he always think Jonny are not died, because he didn’t want Jonny leave him away. If people are around 16 years old, they maybe want to learn how to make them self very cool, and make some adventure. And they also want to learn the technology of each subjects or each aspect we have in this world.

Rick:
From my perspective, this sentence suits Ponyboy very well. Through his story, we can find that Ponyboy learns a lot of things about Socs by chatting with Landy and Cherry. From the chat, Ponyboy knows that some of Socs can understand them. However, Ponyboy is so punny to change the stalemate between Socs and greasers. From this thing, Ponyboy learns to imagine future and become sensitivity intsead of a passionate boy. By reading, we can see the mental growth of Ponyboy. When Ponyboy becomes a hero, he finds that Dally is not so bland. Dally just keeps his love to these kids deeply. Ponyboy becomes to understand other people and knows that he should not judge a person only by his behavior. Like the quote says, 'Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot. But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn.' Ponyboy learns a lot about life and people, he sees many beautiful things. But there are still some bad things happens to him. These things are the things he never wants to have again. For examples, the Socs has already kills Ponyboy for two times, but they fails. And the days with bad food living in the church is also bad experience to him. All in all, I think this quote is quite suitable for Ponyboy.
