For homework, please read pages 42-65 of Of Mice and Men.

Then, choose between the following essay prompts for your essay.  Write at least 200 words, exploring the ideas with your writing:

1. Analyze the characters of Slim, Crooks, and Curley. What role does each character play?

2. Think about the author's portrayal of Curley’s wife as the only female on the all-male ranch.  Why does he write her to be the way that she is?

3. Write a journal entry (diary) from the point of view of one of the characters in the novel.  Think about their perspective of everything happening on the ranch.

Last, please create two discussion questions you would like to share next class.

Please send these to me by email or by posting on the class forum. If any pages/words/parts are confusing, please write them down with your homework and send them to me!

If you have questions, please don't hesitate to email me and ask!

Shirley's Essay:

Curley`s wife didn`t give her a name, I think there are 3 reason. Firstly, maybe they think Curley’s wife was not an important person in this story, and she just a little bit minor role in the story or she just appear once. So Curley’s wife didn`t need name. Secondly, it is about the some plot in the future of this book. Maybe in the future, Curley is very kind with George and Lennie, but Curley’s wife was having different thinking with George and Lennie. Curley`s life might be want George and Lennie leave them away. Then Curley`s wife will change to a bad person, she might have a quarrel or a fighting with Curley.Thirdly, it is about history. This book was written by 100 years ago, this is an old story. In 100 years ago, men and women might be not very equality. They might have a little bit discrimination to women, so Curley’s wife cannot have a name in the story, because she is a woman.

Rick's Homework:

After reading, I want to talk about Lennie. Lennie is a huge and pure man. Maybe purity is not enough to discribe him. Anyway, I am very worried about him.Lennie is just like a little and naughty boy, he makes troubles. However, I don't think the troubles are reasonable enough for the people to bother him. He tries his best to follow George's order. Why he still has to get into troubles! From Lennie, we can also see a lot of things relevented to the writer's era. Lennie dreams to has a small house and takes good care of his rabits and his dogs. So simple the wish is. However, it's hard to reach. Why? I cast a doubt here and consider about it for some time.Maybe we can learn something about the writer from Lennie. I have searched some information about America at that time and I think there is something quite simmilar. I think it can be a discussion question. The first question I came up with is that what is the purpose the writer create the role of Lennie. The second question is that why people don't trust each other at that time.

My analyze of Curley:

First, he is the son of the owner of "Soledad" and the whole story is happened during the Depression era. As we all know, many famous zombie games like The Walking Dead mentioned a farm, because a farm is like "a country" in some way, and it can be self-sufficiencied. So this may told us how rich and safe Curley lived. And Curley was created as a bad-rich-man with no suspense. In ancient Chinese word, this kind of people is called "xiangshen"(乡绅) or  "dizhu"(地主). And if my memory is correct, 90% of these kind of people are bad. They could be treated as god when they meet some flatter people. But if they meet some backboned people, they will be treat as trash with money. And they will be treated as the god of plague when they meet poor people because of their bad actions to the poor. In this book, Curley is created as this kind of person.

Also in Chinese history or story books, the ending of bad-rich-man are written badly. Some of them were killed by the soldiers, and others are killed by a mount of poor people. Although till now we still don't know whether Curley will be killed, he is ought to be killed. In the real world we cannot kill a person no matter how bad he was because it's against the law. But we can keep away from this kind of person. Now there is a saying in Chinese "We can't beat him, but could it be said that it is impossible to run away from him?". So, in the real world, we could run away. Back to the story and in my opinion, Curley must die miserable.

MY QUESTONS:

1. why the writer often use "an' " or "jumpin' " or " jus' " and so on? why he seldom write letter "d" and 'g" ? Does he want to save ink^ _^?

2.why he often use wrong orders of the word?

e.g. Me and Lennie>>> Lennie and I
