Please read p. 37-67 (Ch. 3 and 4) of the Outsiders, as well as the interview with S.E. Hinton starting on page 182.

Then, come up with 2 discussion questions to share with the class.  You can send these to me in an email with your essay.

James' Homework:

Essay Answer:

I think"the outsiders"means people who is not welcomed by the society and the world. They are bad in the adults' eyes. They mighrt be lonely and hopeless. People will suspect them when some bad thing happens. I think it is unfair for them. Although they are not instructed, it does not mean they are bad. Just like one of my friend David, his score is very poor. But he is a very kind and friend. My opponent ALex is a boy who has a very good score. But in my poinion he is a nauseating guy. He usually laugh at others and ignores others who is seeking help to him. He is a very selfish person. So, I think they are kind of poor.

Discussion Question:

◎As we know, Hinton is a lady, but why she write herself as Ponyboy in this book?

Shirley's Homework:

What is your definition of an “outsider”?

I think the word “outsider” is a compound word. “Out” means out of some things, such us he/she went to school, so he/she is out of his/her home. I think the word “sider” are come form side, side which means square have 4 side or triangle have 3 side. If we put “r”(“er”) over the side, it will about people, because so many words like make and maker, teach and teacher. And the side is also means “limit”, so “sider” means the people have a side. When we put “in” or “out” before the word “sider”, so we got two “area” which is “outsider” and “insider”, and our word is “outsider”. For example, a student joins a class in the middle of the course, this student was outsider of this class, that is the student are from other way. In the book《the outsiders》,the meaning of “outsiders” are changes, they think all the main character are different with normal people.so the people in the book are called outsider.

Rick's Homework:

After reading these three chapters, I have two questions.

The First one is that why there is always clash between Socs and Greasers (I have known that there are some differences between Socs and Greasers and there are already 3 clash between these two gangs, but I still have no idea about my question).

The second question I want to share is why Dally is so clam after hearing about the story of Johnny and willing to help them.

To the question What is your definition of an “outsider?”. I think the outsiders are the people who are not good at their profession, not accepted by most people and who don't have contributions to the community. For examples, students in the school who are not good at studying may be called the outsiders by others. And when the students who are not clear with the situation about their group activities or cannot make a contribution to the activity can be also called the outsiders by others. On the other hand, I think the outsiders can be also  consider as the foreigners. For examples, if we having fun travelling to a foreign place. The local people may call us the outsiders. In this case, I I think 'the outsiders' does not mean bad words but a honorific title to others. So sometimes we shouldn't be mad with others when others call us the outsiders. That's what I thought about the meaning of the outsiders.
