Congratulations on finishing The Outsiders!  As homework for next week, please start Of Mice and Men.  There are no chapters in this book, so please read until the top of page 21, where it says, "The old swamper looked quickly at him, and then shuffled to the door rubbing his whiskers with his knuckles as he went.  "Them guys just come," he said, and shuffled past the boss and out the door."

Remember, this book was written in 1937 and it takes place on a farm, so there will be quite a bit of unfamiliar vocabulary words.  A lot of the characters also talk with poor grammar as well!  Write down the questions you have as you read and bring them to class.

Here is your essay question:

What are the main conflicts of The Outsiders? How, if at all, are they resolved? How do the book’s themes are still relevant today, even though it was written a long time ago?

Shirley's homework:

The main conflict of “The Outsiders “ is between Socs and Greasers. There are fight to each other, such as Bob said some bad things to greasers and Jonny was killed Bob and they can`t learn together, they can`t play together. Nearly last of this book, the parents of Socs are went to hospital to ask Pony boy who are killed Bob. And then they went to court to talk about this thing.at last, pony boy are bad back to his life, he went to high school and university. Pony boy are grow up, it’s from a little boy to a real men. I think this book is talk about the things of equality. In this book are equality for the money, this also means race, like Martin Luther King`s book. In different way, maybe they want to say another thing. In this social we also have lots of good person, that they didn’t care you appearance, such as cherry and Randy. They want to talk to some poor people.

Rick's Homework:

From my perspective, the main conflict of the outsiders is discrimination. If we assume the rich people and the poor people are in the same condition of economy, there will not be any conflicts.

To the second question, from my opinion, most of them are resolved, but not all of them. I think some greasers are still wants to fight with the Socs. And some of the greasers are resolved. Like Ponyboy, he tries to persuade other greasers to stop the war. However, he doesn’t know what to do. So he tries to write sorties to strike a chord. He hopes he could help other greasers to find beautiful things in the darkness.

To the third question, I think the books themes are still relevant today. As I said before, the main conflict of the outsiders is discrimination. Even now the discrimination cannot be easily resolved. For examples, the racial discrimination in America is still a big problem. The government is having big difficulties to deal with this situation. So that’s why I think the book still influence today a lot.

Tony's Homework:

In my opinion, the main conflicts of The Outsiders is their class in the society. The socs' class is welcomed ,the greasers are not welcomed. And the socs discriminate them, so the conflicts happen. I don't think it wil be resolved. Although the socs are good students in score, but we can't judge a person only in hie score. A student with all subject A also may break the law. And if the greasers are always be suppressed, it's usual for them to be against the socs. This book isn't written recently, but the classes conflicts is still happening, and this mean the main topic of this book isn't outdated.
