For next week, please read all of Act IV of The Crucible, finishing the book.
As writing homework, you have some options. Since this will be our final response to the play, please use your critical thinking skills to respond, using at least 150 words. Here are some essay questions you may choose to answer:
- Are you surprised about the final decisions of the judges and the townspeople? Who do you agree with the most?
- Compare and contrast Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams. What are their individual positive character traits? Negative character traits? How do they feel about Proctor?
- In Act IV, Scene 4, Proctor agrees to falsely confess in order to avoid death. He later changes his mind. Explain why he refuses to confess. What is the "shred of goodness" he discovers?
- Write an essay discussing the effects of the witch trials on Salem. How do the trials affect the community? Government and authority? The church? Individuals?
Have fun!
