For homework, we are going to read the rest of Act II and move into Act III.  Please read from where we left off ("Why, Abigail Williams charge her." "On what proof, what proof?")  and end at the courtroom scene after Danforth has a long speech.  We will end with the dialogue: "Proctor: 'Do that which is good, and no harm shall come to thee.' Mary Warren: Aye."  In my book this is on page 88.

Then, prepare an essay topic of your choice. Written essays should be at least 150 words. You can choose to analyze some of the character relationships, research puritanism or the Salem Witch Trials (with sources), write about what you would do if you were one of the characters, or  analyze the motives of a character, trying to prove that they are accusing people for different reasons.  If you still need help deciding a topic, just email me.

Also, if you absolutely and honestly don't have time to write a full essay, please email me and I will give you further directions.

Have fun!

Jesse's Essay:

The book THE CRUCIBLE is one of the most complex books I ‘ve read, and how the whole book is like surprised me, not only because the words are very complicated to understand, but also because the interesting things that happened among the theme of witchcraft.

The plot is getting a little vague inside, and I can’t actually understand what are they doing, maybe because we live in different era, and we have different perspectives. I think the witchcraft is a little severe problem at that time, and it was kind of a “trend” which a lot of people were affected by witchcraft and a lot of people were murdered. Even though through the book, I cannot say who is definitely a witch, or who is on the dark side, but I can get the feeling of the people getting caught or cursed, I felt bad for them. Many people were actually clean, and they were affected, their family and friends felt desperate, themselves, too. I think even though I wasn’t hurt by witchcrafts, I understand their feelings, and I can see their craze inside witchcrafts.

Somehow, witchcrafts are the first kind of science and technology, and nowadays people benefit from it. But after I read the book, I can understand the feeling of being cursed and being murdered, also under that time period, people rely on religious beliefs, so with different religions and different perspectives on witchcraft, I see how everyone is badly knocked down by the dark side of witchcrafts.
