For homework, please finish The Westing Game (p. 154-182, Chapters 25-30)!
Then choose two out of the three questions below to answer. Each answer should be at least 150 words. Send me the responses at least an hour before class next week.
1. The central mystery of The Westing Game isn't who killed Sam Westing, it's the question of who any one of us really is. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Can you give reasons for your opinion with examples from the book?
2. Do you think another mystery story could be built around a song? If so, what song would you pick, and what would the mystery be?
3. The Westing Game raises issue about race and equality by including several diverse characters: Judge Ford is African-American and Mr. Hoo is Chinese-American, while Chris and Rosalie (Flora's daughter) are challenged with either physical or mental disabilities. The book is also pretty clear about telling us when characters like Grace act bigoted or prejudiced. How are these hot-button issues addressed in the book, by the author and by the characters? What's the effect of having these topics as part of a consuming murder mystery?
Translate the paragraph on p.173 of Ch. 27 beginning “Julian R. Eastman rose. He looked stern. And very proper…”
Have fun!
