Homework for Class #26: Island of the Blue Dolphins

For homework, please read pages 65-111 (Chapters 11-18) of Island of the Blue Dolphins.

1. Please answer this essay question in at least 250 words and send it to me before class:

It is as if Karana speaks to the sea, tells secrets to the cliffs, whispers to the wind and becomes friends with the yellow-eyed dog, her enemy that she tames to friendship. Describe how Karana interacts with her natural environment. Then, what is your relationship to the natural world?

2. Please create two discussion questions for class.

3. Translate the last paragraph on p.70 in Ch. 9 beginning “I put the ribs together with their edges almost touching, and standing….”

George's Homework:

Karana didn't be rude to the environment, instead, she accept the truth hopefully, and she tried don't hurt the animals and plant as she got food and materials to protect. She always believed that the white man's ship would come back someday. I think Karana whispered to the blowing wind and the sea because she wanted if the god would hear it. She was kind in saving the leader of the wild dogs, as same as she did to the birds which came in spring and lived nearby her house. The way I release all of my sadness, is that standing on the beach, watching the sea, especially at night. Even though the city I live isn'y nearby the sea, in every journey to the city that haves beautiful sea-view, I would do this as people often speak to God, I would talk to the sea with my inner voice, or sing a song aloud, this time I would feel the wind, the smell of the salt water, and revere to the nature for its great power to build this wonderful world, and I would have no impurities in my mind, but peace and happiness, I would think that how tiny human are by comparing the the nature.
AND MY QUESTIONS ARE:
1:why didn't Karana kill the leader of the wild dogs?
2: Karana let the fence open every time she went out and led the dog go, whyshe felt strange and lonely when she didn't see the dog at once?

I think Karana is a strong, kind-hearted, caring girl. Probably because she lives in blue dolphin Island, so there are very familiar with the things of there, she thinks she just a member of nature. In her view, respectively without noble and humble, everything there， no life or life can become friends. She loved life, understand the nature of the law of survival. Finally, even the wild dogs became her friends, but also because of her kindness. I agree with Clara's idea. I think in treating nature is the thing that I have a lot of places need learn from her.Anyway,i always think we should treat nature like our mother.We should get something that we need it and we also should give something to the nature. No one is indebted to us, so we should try my best to repay those who give us grace. I was just an ordinary life, if you do not comply with the laws of nature, we will be punished.

We can't leave nature in our life.When you're stepping around in your garden,you're in thee nature.

Karana's relationship：

She fear of the nature,but she also rely on nature.if there's no "the island of the blue dophin",I'm sure she

will die.She get a hope of life on this island.But there's also many strange things on this island make her

afraid,such as dogs,enemies or hunger.But she has insist till the end.

My relationship:

Of course,I have much better relationship than Karana's.There's no such bad things to me.There's a little garden

behind my apartment building.There are many grass and flowers in it，such as mint,Chinese rose or jasmine.

There's mint everywhere on my garden's dirt.I like it very much.when I'm in the garden,I feel relaxed and

confortable.

My translation:

I put these ribs one by one and the tips get outward,so it will be impossoble to climb.I wrap some strings

on them,when it is dry it will be pulled,so it's very tight.In the beggining,I want to wrap it with seal sinews

but the animals like to eat it,a few time later the fence will be broken.I spend a lot of time to make the fence.

if I don't let the rock to be a part of the fence,It will spend me much time.
