For homework, please read pages 137-175 (chapters 11-13) of Jacob Have I Loved.

Then, write three essay questions considering the following questions:

1. What is the purpose of the grandmother's character?

2. What are two of Louise's internal struggles in this section of reading?

3. What does Katherine Paterson do to make her characters feel like real people and not just "characters in a book"?

Also, be prepared to talk about your favorite part in each chapter and why you like it.

Have fun!

Lola's Homework:

1.In the book, Grandma seemed had all the bad characteristic. When the storm came she was acting like a baby; when Wheeze's father offered Captain to live in their house, she was complaining. But she was also the one who found out that I was looking at Captain and knew what I was thinking of. Maybe she was there to remind Wheeze how impossible her thoughts was.
2.When Wheeze and the Captain found out that he lost everything even his house, Wheeze felt so sorry so she put her arms around Captain. On that moment, part of herself thought she should let go but what she really wanted to do was to hold him tighter.  Wheeze knew that Captain was even older than her grandma, but when she thought of him and his clean nails she had the feeling of almost fell in love with him.
3.In my opinion I think she succeed making the characters real in giving them the true feelings. Nobody in the real life is perfect, so everyone will be jealous, or something like that. When she was making the character of Wheeze, the emotion of her heart and what she thought could tell us that she was jealous.  And also at Wheeze age, people began to touch love, but love is such a magical thing that nobody knew when it came and why. So the embarrassment and the little joy in Wheeze heart made her real. Although some of her actions make her ridiculous, but that was just the thing that the writer wanted us to feel, as Wheeze was only a little girl who lived on a island, it let us love this character more, for her innocent , warm-hearted, young and hope. Maybe also youth, because we can see ourselves inside this character.
