For homework, please finish The Summer of the Swans!  Then, write answers to the following questions.  Make sure you read over the answers again after you write to check for mistakes.  Be prepared to discuss these further as well.

  1. How does Sara change throughout the story?
  2. What happens to Charlie? To Joe?
  3. What does Sara talk about with her father?
  4. What does Sara’s metaphor about stairs mean?

After that, do two more things.  First, select one vocabulary word that you do not know and define it.  Last, create one discussion question about the reading to share with the class.

For review, here are the words from chapter 17 that we went over:

  • Ravine = A deep cut in the earth
  • Roused = Creating energy
  • Puffed = big and swollen
  • Eyelids = The top of your eye
  • Dullness = The opposite of sharp or shiny

Nicole's homework:

1.How does Sara change throughout the story?

Sara heard somebody's crying, and the sound hears exactly like Charlie. That makes she found Charlie. So Sara change the story's sad ending in to happy ending.

2. What happens to Charlie? To Joe?

Charlie cannot remember a lot of things. But that's all right, finally, Sara found him. and he got a new watch from Joe. Joe Melby and Sara are good friend now, and Joe invited Sara to go to Bennie's party.

3. What does Sara talk about with her father?

Sara and his father are talking about Charlie's missing event. Maybe this is the first time Sara's father have contect with Sara's family. So Sara is happy and excited.

4. What does Sara's metaphor about stairs mean?

Sara thinks stairs just like life. She will go higher and higher. Charlie is a 'special need's kid, so he will be difficult to walk on the steps. The people in the world are walking on those steps, just some people are easy to walk, and some people didn't. We have to continued walking, and till one day, we are the top of the stairs!

Prison(p.128): It is a place that where the criminals were living.

Question: In page 128, why does Sara said her father down at the bottom of some steps, just sitting and not trying to go further?
