For Homework, please read page 70 - 89, ending with, "The fingers trailed after her leading wrist, and her little finger stuck out grandly from the rest."

Then, please write an essay, choosing one of the following essay questions to answer.  Make your response at least 150 words, and continue writing out your different thoughts and organizing them into a lovely flow.  As always, re-read your work to look for grammar and spelling errors before emailing it to me.

1. What do you think about Crooks' story of his background?  How does he feel about living on a ranch where there are no other people with black skin and how the others treat him?

2. Compare Crooks' attitude about George and Lennie's land on pages 76 and then 83. How does his attitude change? Does it change?

3. Compare Crooks and Curly's wife (who are both secluded from the other characters)

As a reminder, here are the vocabulary words we went over:

Gulp = a sound of swallowing

Lola:

Crooks and Curley's wife are both victims of discrimination of that time. And also they represent not only themselves but also that group of people--females and black people.First we will talk about Crooks. Crooks lived in his own room because he was a black guy and everybody considered him as a person that could bully and few people would talk to him. From Crooks' own words we could know that there were only two person that came into his room, manager and Slim. At other time, he spent his time in his lonely small room and were not allowed to access the white, without friends and conversations.Books might be the only true friend of Crooks. This directly shows that how bad the black people were treated at that time. Then we should move on to Curley's wife. She was also separate from others because of her behaviors. The workers thought she was a bad woman and a bad wife. But no one cared about why a normal married female would become a person like this. The only reason was that she didn't get the respect of others and also her husband didn't do the things that a husband should do, such as spent some time with her so that she won't feel alone. Crooks and Curley's wife were both the person that separate from others. But the difference between them was that Crooks confined himself in a lonely world, while Curley's wife turned into searching for a person that could talk with everyday. In a way, Curley's wife was braver to face this world because she wasn't tied by discrimination. But on the other hand, from the action of insulting Crooks I found that she was also more cruel and selfish than Crooks. They had some things in common but they were also totally different characters and both of them are poor victim of that dark time.
