For homework, read to the page 56 of Of Mice and Men, or if you have a kindle, you can end after they are talking about Curley's wife: "'Andy's in San Quentin right now on account of a tart,' said George." (By the way, San Quentin is a state prison, so it means that Andy cheated with someone else's wife and ended up in prison.)
Also, please write an essay (at least 150 words) about the way the characters in the play communicate with each other. Do they say what they mean? Think about what each character really wants and feels--do they normally come right out and say it? Does George tell Lennie he loves him, Curley's wife tell her husband she is bored, Candy tell everyone he is sad about his dog?
Here are the words we discussed during class. For next week, please make a list of phrases and words that you couldn't make sense of in the dictionary.
Bunker = the house where all of the men stay who help on the ranch
Handy = Curley likes to use his hands to fight and uses them well
Lightweight = Curley doesn't weigh very much, but he is a good, quick fighter and did it professionally
the ring = the boxing ring, or the area where you fight
Scrap = a fight
Punk = a young, reckless guy
Got the Eye = Curley's wife is looking at men other than her husband
Tart = a woman who is a cheater
Have fun!
