Forum Assignment: On her website, Cynthia Kadohata makes it clear that she knows intimately the world she describes in kira-kira:

“I was born in Chicago in 1956. We moved to Georgia, where my father found a job as a chicken sexer. Then when I was about two, he found a chicken-sexing job in Arkansa, where we lived until I was almost nine. “

Although she does not say it, she had to have known what it was like to be the victim of both prejudice and stereotyping. Perhaps that’s why her novel kira-kira refuses to deal in stereotypes. Or does it? Please explain how you think Kadohata undermines or relies on stereotypes in the creation of character.
