I have cried over myself a hundred times this summer, she thought, I have wept over my hig feet and my skinny legs and my nose, I have even cried over my stupid shoes, and now when I have a true sadness there are no tears left.
She held him against her for a moment and now the hot tears were in her eyes and on her cheeks and she didn't even notice.
Sara cried for several times that summer, but these two have different meanings. at first, she cried for herself because she was not perfect and good loking, but now she cries for her brother because he was lost and finally she found him. as you can see, with her cries, we can see sara improved a lot this summer by taking care of her brother.
Sara could not understand why she suddenly felt so good. It was a puzzle. The day before she had been miserable. She had wanted to fly away from everything, like the swans to a new lake, and now she didn't want that any more.
she used to think that no one cares about her, she was always the lonely kid sitting alone in the corner. she thought she stands for nothing which is uncool, but she cannot change this situation, so she became self inferior , and she always want to avoid everything. but taking care of charlie and finding him in the wood make her find the self belongings and the meaning of her existence. so she didn't want that any more.
this paragragh is rich in metaphor and simile . sara regarding her life as uneven steps is simile. sara regarding charlie's life as standing on difficult step, regarding her father's life as sitting at the bottom at the floor are metaphors.
and i think this paragragh remains more than the picture which describes the way the whole family met, which sara imagined to be liked.
i think we can compare steps to different kinds of lives with dirrenfent potential.
i think standing motionless in her prison shirt, and taking an enormous step up out of the shadows means that sara had a life with sadness, compliant and sorrow, but with the incident of charlie, she becomes mature all of a sudden. she really learnt something that i cannot describe. now she lives for a goal, she has a target to fight for, and a dream to persue.
she was standing, waiting, and there were other steps in front of her, so that she could go as high as the sky. i think this means that she will grow more mature when something crucial happens to her life. she will be like a feather, when wind blows, she will float in the air and go higher and higher.
Charlie on a flight of small difficult steps. this means that charlie had a brain damage , he seems to be a little baby forever. although his body keeps growing, his mind will stay the same, he is the one who is always taken cared by others. this make me think that someone in our lives has a born scar, the things are not fair to those people such as handicaped people or the children whose parents are divorced. the progress seems to be harder to achieve for them. although they pay more , they will receive little. to sum up, life is not fair to everyone.
her father down at the bottom of some steps, just sitting and not trying to go further. some peple are really poor, they will never come top of the society,they cannot realize their tiny little dreams, but the rest of us are lucky, we are able to chase our dreams, so we must try our best to fight for them. her father is a normal man, unlike charlie, he can do something a man do. he just abondoned the family, and digged in the dirt till the night comes, day after day. he can do something meaningful including taking care of the family, but he lost his dream. maybe he had a dream, but the life is too hard for him, so he had to drop the dream and faced the reality. finally, he became a motionless robot that only work for three meals.
She saw everyone she knew on those blinding white steps and for a moment everything was clearer than it had ever been. sara looked through the complicated things in the world, she knew all kinds of people she met, and she knew what other people are going to be, and she is becoming stronger and she can take more things on her shoulder. most importantly, she knew the destiny of herself. a little naughty teenage gurl just became a sophisticated woman by the help of all the events happened this summer.
