Great first class! For homework, please finish reading the book (from the page “The ship docked at Ellis Island” onward). Look up any words that you do not know.

Please also answer the following question and send it to my email before next class:

With the ideas of “The Promised Land” and the “American Dream” we discussed today in class in mind, what does Jessie learn about America? Is America at all like the stories she has heard? Why or why not?

Also, please translate the note that Jessie wrote to her Grandmother on the page beginning “You must go to school..” into Chinese. Be prepared to translate your Chinese note back into English during next class. We will see how closely your translation matches Jessie’s note!

Amy's Homework:

This is my homework.

Jess learn about that there are too many people in America, she can see the pushcarts and shops and the trolleys speeding by the city.There are no cows.

And America is not at all like she has heard. Because the streets are not gold, the people in America also need to study and work.
