1. Please read Ch. 5- 7 (pages 59-97) of Kira-Kira.

2. Respond to the following on the forum and read your classmate’s responses in preparation for class (250 words minimum):

Reflect on the quote “Lynn said that sometimes in life you had to make hard choices” (Ch. 3 p. 26). Why does Katie say this? When in your life have you had to make a difficult decision?

3. Complete the venn diagram contrasting Katie’s father with Uncle Katsuhisa that we began in class and send via email to Virgillo (vahunter@syr.edu)

4. Translate the last paragraph on p.61 beginning “Everything started to change the winter I was ten and a half” into Chinese.

5. Read “Japanese Americans in the 1950s” handout you received via email.

Katie said this because her uncle bought a marble chess and wanted to challenge Lynn. When he wanted get some confidence from Katie, she told the truth which she thought Lynn would beat him down easily. She remembered that her mother told her to be polite and also don’t lie to others, so she had to make choices when she receive a question like her uncle asked.

When I was eight, my parents decided to move our home from Shenyang to Dalian, it was a hard time for me. Things would change a lot, I would miss all the friends there, the only thing to get connect with them was to have a phone call. Although I lost friends and lots of memories, I still had to go forward. Life need be continue and I would meet new things and new people in a brand new place, so I agreed to move to Dalian with my parents. That was a memory of when I made hard decisions.

In the book, Katie and Lynn was in difficult to choose to lie or do not lie to uncle, so they need to have a decision. In my life, I once had a difficult time to solve a problem, and that is to change a school. One month ago, I was in a normal middle school, and my parents found a peccable experimental middle school which like a international school in Shanghai. I went to the school and had a school trip which lead by a student in the class. At first, when I first step into the school, I wondered if this school is better than my old school because of the outside appearance of the school which is old and stereotype. And the part of the experimental one is deep inside of the school. I was hating about this kind of design. But when I got into the international part of the school, it is extremely different, and it subvert the idea I view this school. The teachers are foreigners and the students are abundant to speak Chinese unless this is a Chinese class. This attract my eyes. But the one which interrupt me the most is at first I was test for grade 7, which grade I was, but my parents and I both thought that this grade is far too low for my level. So after a few asking, I was accepted go to grade 8 and have classes. Because grade 8 there is really challenging which I was like to, so I decided to go to this school.

Hi Derica your response to this week's question is spot on. Lynn battled with her choice of telling the truth and being polite. The question her uncle asked put her in an awkward position. She wavered between her choices, and decides to tell the truth, though this hurts her uncle feelings. This is something that we all struggle with; we vacillate (alternate between different opinions or actions), before making a final decision and then deal with the consequences.

Regarding moving to Dalian when you were in the 8th grade, I do not know if you had a lot of say in the matter like Lynn and Katie, because like them you were young. However, you provide a lot of information, about migrating impacts someone's world. You had to leave old friends behind and adjust yourself to a new setting, but once settled you created new friends and memories. Migrating can strengthen and transform your bond with friends and family or destroy it based on the amount of energy or lack thereof we pour into maintaining these links. You did a great job. In your next post, I would like you to use some of the newly learned vocabulary words to enhance your writing

Hi Max, thank you for sharing your perspectives of the constant internal battle of making the decision of telling the truth and hurting someone's feelings Katie endures. Like Lynn and Katie, we all struggle with hurting peoples' feelings. We weigh our decisions and predict outcomes to maintain some sort of peaceful environment or relationship. On changing your school, though you had a say in the matter, your parents' heavily influenced where and the type of school you attended, because of your age. Conversely, though you had issues making new friends at your new school, you became friends with students experiencing difficulties, similar to you, of assimilating into a new school and space. You did a great job with the assignment, and I like your use of words such as peccable and subvert; however, please check the meaning of words before using them to ensure that you're using them in context to convey your thoughts and enrich your writing. Also if you can, read over your work and make edits. Again, you did a wonderful job on this week's assignment, keep using new words to bolster (strengthen) your writing

In the book, Katie and Lynn were in difficult to choose to whether to lie to their uncle, so they need to make a decision. In my life, I once had a difficult time to solve a problem, and that is to change a school. One month ago, I was in a common middle school, and my parents found a impeccable (well-chosen) experimental middle school which likes an international school in Shanghai. I went to the school and had a school trip which led by a student in the class. When I first step into the school, I wondered if this school is better than my old school because the outside appearance (outlook)of the school is old and stereotype. However, the part of the experimental one is deep inside of the school and it is delicately decorated. I was hating about this kind of design. But when I got into the international part of the school, it is extremely different, and it subverts the idea I view this school. The teachers are foreigners and the students are forbidden to speak Chinese unless this is a Chinese class. This attracts my eyes. But the one which interrupts me the most is that my parents and I both thought that 7 grade is too low to my level. So after a few consultation from the principle, I was accepted to go to grade 8 and had classes. Because grade 8 there is really challenging for me, so I determined to go to this school.
