Please read p. 95-139 (Chapters 22-30) of Holes.

Based on our discussion of superstitions in class, answer the following:

What superstition exists in the novel Holes? Is there more than one? How does the belief in each superstition shape the lives of the characters in the story? Consider Elya Yelnats and Madame Zaroni (no-good-dirty-rotten-pig-stealing-great-great-grandfather...) The Warden, her grandfather, and the holes being dug at Camp Greenlake. Do you have any superstitions?

If you did not complete the word search in class, please complete for homework. You are responsible for knowing the definitions of each of the words!

There are more than one superstitions in the book Holes.

Elya Yelnats and Madame Zaroni believed that made the pig drink the stream from the top of the mountain would help it grow well.

Madame Zaroni also believed that if Elya Yelnats didn’t bring her to drink the stream, he and his offspring would be unlucky forever.

Sam believed that eating onions could make people become healthier and live long.

More than one hundred years ago, most of the people in the town Green Lake believed that God would punish Kate for she kissed Sam and God punished her by letting no rain drop fall on the Green Lake.

My family has a superstition that my late great grandpa will protect us if we pay respect to him on his anniversary. I’ve never seen my great grandpa. Sometimes I believe this superstition.

On the anniversary of my great grandfather, all of our family members go to my great grandmother’s home and “visit” him. There is a photo of him in the room and a desk with many fruits and joss sticks in a pot. I started to go there when I’m such small that I couldn’t figure out what the adults were doing.

Firstly they took some joss sticks (always 3) from my great grandma’s hands and kindle the sticks. Then they bowed low to the photo with the joss sticks holding in both of their hands. I noticed that my grandpa always murmured sth to the photo when he was bowing. Finally they walked straight to the desk and insert the joss sticks in their hands into the earth in the pot.

I began to know the meaning of this serious of behaviors when I become older. I think it is also a kind of commemorative activity. When I was bowing down to that photo, I often murmured something about saying hello and an introduction of myself to him. Last year, my youngest cousin took part in the anniversary and it was her first time. I felt interesting when I found that her behaviors were similar to the behaviors of the 5-year-old me.

I also believed in an Octopus called Paul. During the World Cup in 2010, he successfully predicted 8 matches. Unfortunately, he wasn’t alive now. I hope his son could do even better than him

The superstition in this book is more than one. First, there is a superstition about Stanley. He was put in this camp because his great-great-grandfather. At least the book show us this. Beside that, Warden have one too, and so to Kate Barlow. I think they all believe in this superstition too much. If there is something happens, they will think that this should be the curse.

I don't have any superstition. I don't believe in curse. But sometimes when I meet something unlucky, I will see it as a kind of curse. There are also some custom that is nearly a superstition. Such as we can't cut our hair before February 2 or our uncle will die. Although I don't believe in the curse, but I will not cut my hair before that day.
