For Homework: Please finish reading the book.

Then, post responses on the forum to the following questions:

  1. How does Sara change throughout the story? Give examples with page numbers.
  2. What does Sara’s metaphor about stairs mean on p. 128?

Also, please translate the paragraph on p. 128 beginning with “A picture came into her mind of the laughing, curly-headed man…” into Chinese (this is Sara’s metaphor about stairs). You do not need to post your translation on the forum, but instead be prepared to translate your work back into English during next class. We will see how natural your translation sounds.

Don’t forget to be prepared with a favorite quote /part from each chapter for next class.

Sara leads whole story change. Her attitude of Charlie is changed from beginning to ending. P133 shows she was really worry about Charlie, she was so happy to found Charlie. At the beginning she was tiresome to care for Charlie, but when Charlie loosed then she knows how much valuable does Charlie is. That stairs shows everyone’s condition, someone is going up, someone is stay in same condition.

At first, Sara was girl who is a little stubborn, though she is really care about her brother Charlie, we can see it in charpter seven, page 30-35, then she was angry because of she thought Joe stole Charlie's watch(although it's not true). in Charpterfourteen page 77-81. And she was regret about Joe when she knew the truth. Finally, in Joe's helping, them found Charlie, and Sara thought Joe is a good friend. I think Sara's metaphor about steps is she thought Charlie, Joe, Mary, and her walked across problems together, some of them are really hard, and other problems are waiting her in the future, her will face them with her friends.

1. Before Charlie lost this thing happen, without Charlie, Sara always alone. And she think her life is meaningless. But after this thing, she found that she is not alone, she try to made friends and asked them for help, finally found Charlie. And the last plot is Sara came to a party, that's really a big change.[last chapter]

2. I think the stairs like the problems, Sara, Charlie and Joe can face those problem together. And also they become good friends.

Sara is changing in the whole story. First, she thinks she is the poorest people in the world. Until her brother miss, her friend and she are finding Charlie. In this finding she gets happy feeling.

I think Charlie is the character in the Sara’s metaphor; Charlie is a mental handicap child, other students always laugh him. They don’t want to be his friend. The steps I think is helping. Friend’s helping can let you going to success to fix some problems that you can’t solve.
