Greetings,

In preparation for our first class, please read chapters 1-4 (pages 1-58) of Kira-Kira by Cynthia Kadohata. We will explore Kadohata's use of language to help us better understand how World War II shaped Japanese-American family structure and life. Be prepared to talk about how she uses poetry, memory, and story-telling to paint settings and narrate Japanese-American family experiences. Lastly, before class, please also translate the paragraph on p.7 beginning “Our parents owned a small Oriental foods grocery store,” into Chinese. We will do an activity with your translation during class.

See you all soon,

Virgillo Hunter
