For homework, please read Chapters 7 to Chapter 12 of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

On the forum, please respond to the following:

What is the miracle that happens to Charlie and how did Charlie’s family react towards the miracle? Has anything completely unexpected and miraculous ever happened in your life? Describe the circumstance.

Please translate p. 40 beginning with “And now, very calmly, with that curious wisdom…” until the end of the page.

While you are reading, here are some questions to keep in mind, especially since this book is a little more difficult than Charlotte's Web.  You don't need to post replies to these, but just think about them during the week:

  • How did Charlie feel after he opened his birthday present? How did his family feel?
  • What is your impression of Violet? Do you agree with Grandma Georgina, calling her despicable?
  • What is your impression of Mike Teavee?
  • What do we learn about Grandpa Joe in this reading? Is his gambling worth it?

Have fun reading!

Hey Audrey! I am posting for Kitty!

1)      One day, on Charlie’s way home, he found some money in the deep snow and he ran to the neariest shop to buy two bars of Wonlca’s chocolate because he was really hungry after eating little cabbage for many days. When Charlie opened the second bar of chocolate, he found the golden ticket under the wrapper!

2)      Charlie told the miracle to his parents and the four old men. Their expressions didn’t change a lot but they were all excited in their heart.

3)      I also had the experience like Charlie. (But it’s not a miracle.) I don’t talk a lot to my deskmate because we don’t have a good relationship. In an Art class, our teacher asked us to bring some painting brushes but  I don’t have that brushes at home, so I complained : “ Oh! I have to buy brushes tonight!” The next day on the Art class, maydeskmate gave me two brushes, he said:”I have many brushes at home so I bring some more.” At that time, I felt warm, though I bought the brush too. But I was also thankful to him.

Thank you for posting for Kitty, Xiaojie!

Kitty, I love your personal story in relation to Charlie's story.  I especially like how you used the (parentheses) in the story.  One thing that we can work on is the appropriate past tense: "I DIDN'T have that brush at home," and then later, "I have many brushes at home so I BROUGHT some more."

But overall, you have lovely responses!

1.Carlie found some money incredibly. After that he went to the nearest shop as soon as possible. He has bought 2 candy bars, suddenly he would not be hungry any more. It is marvelous that there was actually a golden tickets under the wrapper.

2. Firstly, the family cannot believe the truth.Grandpa Joe was really over excited, so that he jumped very high. Mr.Bucket felt unbelievable and excited, too. Nevertheless he still pretended that he was calm.

3. This incident is really unbelievable. In a damp conner of my classroom without any sunlight, a small mushroom grew up. Now it is getting bigger and bigger, and there are "professional" students take care of it every day. Although it is tiny it doesn't have any colorful color, I feel it is a miracle,as it is so strong that it can survive in a rough and awful condition.

Nice job, Ashley.  Your answers are pretty clear and concise.  That is a great example about the classroom mushroom--and it's a crazy story, too!  Make sure after you write a response, you read over it to find simple mistakes and typos like "Carlie" instead of Charlie, "a golden tickets" instead of ticket, or "a damp conner" instead of damp corner.
