Hi Class,

Please finish reading the book Ch. 14- 16 (pages 201- 244).

Respond to the following on the forum (250 words minimum):

Katie makes frequent lists: lists of what she wants, of how she feels, of what she should do. How does making lists help her? (Examples: Ch 2 p.19, Ch 3 p.40, Ch. 13 p.198 & 199)

Lynn’s last night was a rough one. When she finally fell asleep, Katie took the opportunity to sit outside in the peace and quiet of the early morning. She made a mental list of the things she heard and the things she saw. Spend ten minutes outside your classroom or your house. Make a detailed and very descriptive list of what you see and hear.

Translate: The paragraph on p.233 that begins “Mr. Lyndon came in. My father and I stood up.”

Optional assignment: Lynn always wanted to go to the ocean in California. Write a haiku titled "Kira-Kira" that Katie might write and dedicate to Lynn after her family returns from the west coast.

Reminder: Homework assignments are due on Thursday, the latest, so that I can provide feedback ahead of time. Also remember to keep adding to your word journals/templates and use those words to elevate your postings and class discussions. The responses to last week's assignment were great, keep it up.

Best,

Hey Virgillo! I am posting for Derica!

Katie kept making frequent lists as a habite. She made list about why they were late on their way to Georgia. She made lists about what issues or subjects she missed during her life when she leaved Iowa. She even made lists of things that she heard of or seeing of on a very sad night. All these lists helped her to organized her thought, she could lists all things she wanted to do, and follow the lists and go for it. And It was even a good way to get things organized, you can list what you have previously and what you had already missed, then you would feel more thankful and be more preciously of what you got. Katie used extra times to write down those lists, which meant she used extra time and extra effort to think about questions; to think about the problems that lead them to be behind of the schedule, to think about what fun things that she missed after she came to Georgia, to think about what details made that specific night so differently and unforgettable ----the night that took away Lynn. She used those lists and notes to record her life, she simplified those issues and used her own words to record meaningful day. she saw the world from the perspective of the pure eyed that young. Those lists were not that simple for her which involved her emotions there, and she used those lists to recall herself the time that her sister was still alive.

The sounds I heard A dog was barking downstair. My grandfather was watching a movie about the Anti- Japanese war next to my bedroom. my breath.

The things I saw my stuffs and stationaries laid on my desk. my Kira-Kira the distance lights, because my bedroom was facing to the ocean I could even see the reflections of those lights were shining above the water.

Katie has her own way of listing which is diary like listing. This kind of  listing will help Katie in may ways and it is a diary reveals the actual life and real thoughts of Katie. First the listing made her keep doing things she have not done yet and the things she need to do or her parents should do in the future. As we can see on Chapter 2, page 19, she said her parents misplaced their six hundred dollars, uncle Katsuhisa fell a asleep, and we thought it would be rude to wake him, on the next page, these things had and end: her parents replaced the six hundred dollars and uncle wake up by no interrupting. At this point of view, the listing used as a Katie's "portable reminder” in her young age. On the other hand, her list is used as a view taking. She took down the scene she considered beautiful, shows her eager of glittering, spotless life, she took it down. On page 40, Katie took down the view outside her window, and she took down the movement of Mrs. Chen planting tomatoes. Those notes gave us the thoughts of she is a person loving her life, a person who wanted for happy life. Further more, the listing will be changed to dark color when she do not feel pleasant. On the page of 199, “The gray sky” shows us the darkness and the unhappiness inside her heart, and tells the reader the feeling of Katie when her sister is going to die.

Hi Derica, you did a great job detailing the usefulness of note keeping and listing things to help in recall important events and images. As we know, Lynn kept a diary up until her death, and her frequent entries provides a snapshot of her life and how she sees things. Based on her entries, we can surmise that she was free-spirited, caring, and effervescent. I also like you your Kira-Kira moment. It is easy to overlook commonplace things like birds, flowers, and the fixed items at our work stations, but like Lynn and Katie, the ocean is a constant in your life and evokes special feelings and thoughts. I like how used the surrounding city lights to color the water bringing new life, meaning, and depth to it. Good job. Remember to use newly learned vocabulary to add flavor to your writing and check for errors. Again, good job

Hi Max, I like how you cited specific sections from the book to support your claims of Lynn's diary entries and how they help us unpack her inner most thoughts and feelings. We know that Lynn dies towards the ending of the book, but while she was alive she seems flat, a workhorse, and Katie constantly praises her up until her illness. However, her frequent entries reveal a different side to her. She's very caring and often seem vulnerable, but at the same time strong. Kadohata did a great job using Lynn's diary entries to keep her center-stage, alive, and present in the story. For example, though Lynn eventually dies from Lymphoma and anemia, Kadohata uses her diary entries to help fill the gaps in her life. You did a great job. Remember to use newly learned vocabulary words to elevate your work. Also, please check your post for simply mistakes. Again, good job
