Homework Assignment for 4th Class

Katie had an explanation about her relationship among her brother and sister. She explained that they took care of one another. Her sister Lynn always took care of her, and as the second child at home, she always took care of Sammy. We can see that it was a family full of peace and happiness. As I read the book I knew that Lynn always regards Katie as a little child, she helped her to do her assignment after school, and she solve problems and encouraged her when she faced troubles. Refer to Katie, she always thought Lynn was supposed to take care of her, to help with her homework and help her to get straight “A”. Katie‘s job was just took care of Sammy, the calmest boy in the world, all she needs to do was fed him when their parents wasn’t beside and change clothing for him at night, but it all changed since Lynn ill. Lynn lied on bed every day, and she took most time of the day to sleep. She couldn't help Katie doing her homework, which brought a bad grade for her. Lynn get worse that she got too to go to school, so Katie had to play the big sister’s role. She had to feed Lynn iron pills and took care of her, and the same time she also need to assume the work of taking care of her brother. And as the story progressed, Lynn lost her friend—Amber, and she got very upset of being dallied by Amber, Katie saw her sister was in a hard time, so she went to find Amber for revenge. And when Lynn had some requires about some glittery pink polish, Katie went to the store and stole it for Lynn regardless. When Lynn got sick, Katie was person that always make her happy and took care of her.

Hi Derica, you did well detailing the changes of Katie and Lynn's relationship. As we read, Lynn progressively becomes more ill and unable to help herself do simple tasks like getting water or milk. She also becomes more indecisive and this puts a lot of pressure on the family, especially Katie. Their dad reveals that Lynn is struggling with Lymphoma, which eventually claim her life. Like you detailed, Katie takes on multiple roles and it impacts her health and grades. She might have to go summer school to make-up for missing school and poor grades. At the start of Kira-Kira, we learned that Lynn helps Katie with her assignements, but as we read on she's unable to continue this task, because of her illness. You pointed out that Katie tries to make Lynn happy before she passes by stealing nail polish to bring some glitter and hope into her life. Kadohata did a great job using haikus to portray Lynn's last few days. The wind rustling, the room becoming more quiet, and the moth fluttering in Katie's room signals the final stages of Lynn's journey to the next life. At first, Katie was the sister of Lynn, and Sammy was the brother of Lynn and Katie. So Lynn has the responsiblity to take care of both Katie and Sammy because of the relationship between them and she was the eldest.And as we can see, Lynn was a straight "A" student shows us she was the best in school, also, she was taking the household job tells us she's also helpful at home. So for these reasons, Lynn abosolutely was going to take the job of taking care of her brother and sister.

However, Lynn changed during the few paragraphs. She got sick and she could not do anything but stay on the bed or hand out with her friends for a few while, though she still got even worse after she hand out with her friend. In this case, Katie need to take the place of Lynn to look after both Lynn and brother Sammy. She need to give her sister "iron pill" and also need to take Lynn to te doctor and fix other things which Lynn can do but Katie cannot do. For she did not have as much strategy as Lynn, she always "took a lesson" from either her mother and father.
