2. Who is Amber? What is she like? How does Katie react to her?

3. On Google, do the following search "shunning + Amish."  Look up the second entry, "Amish shunning,"and read the first two small paragraphs.  Do you think this is what Katie did to Lynn?  Explain.

Chapter 6

1. Why is Katie upset when Lynn worries about her? What is the difference in the way Lynn worries now compared to the beginning of the novel?

2. This is the second time Uncle Katsuhisa's ex-wife is mentioned.  What do you think happened to her?  Why did they break up?

Chapter 7

1. Contrast the world of the Takeshima's with that of the Lyndon's.

2. Why does Mrs. Takeshima work?  List three things which her children have to do because she works.. (How do they adjust their lives to her work schedule?) Do they mind making theses adjustments?  Why or why not?

3. When Mrs. Takeshima returns to the car after her shift, what does Katie notice about her?  How has the relationship between parents and children changed?

Chapter 8

2. On p. 104, Katie's day is over.  Think about what kind of day she had.  List what she did.  Did she have any fun?  Is this what one would expect for a girl her age?  How would you feel if you had a day like hers?

3. When Katie compares herself to Silky, what does she find?  Is this a fair judgement?  Why or why not?

Attached is a list of the vocabulary I pulled from the chapters we read and the chapters we are now reading.  Be sure to go over the list and get familiar with the words and their meanings.  If there are words you think should be added, please write them down and we will discuss them in the next class.  Also, there is a short vocabulary exercise following the list which I would like you to complete.

1.Lynn was hit by a ball in her chest and she was ill.

2.Amber is Lynn's best friend. Amber was popular too. She was a really girlie girl. Katie think that she might be Lynn's best friend and Amber is the second.

1.Katie think that the way Lynn worried about her is just like the way you worry about a baby. At the beginning, Lynn worries Katie more like a friend. She respect her and that make Katie feels warm. But now, Lynn sees Katie as a little child that makes Katie feels uncomfortable.

2.Maybe she didn't like Uncle anymore, so she left him. I think the break up because Uncle was a really good talker, and sometimes his stories can make other people angry, so his ex-wife didn't like it.

1.Takeshima's world was not easy. They were not reach, so they have to work hard every day. But Lyndon's world was full of money. He was very reach. His car is a Cadillac, he has a very big and expensive house.

2.She have to earn money for her family. First, her children has to get up early to go to work with her. Second, the children have to stay in the car and sleep to wait for their mother.

3.Katie noticed some white hairs that she never seen before. Parents worked very hard to earn money, so their time with their children was less than before.

1.She looked kind of green.

2.I think she had a busy and tired day. She went to work with her mother and took care of her brother in the car. When she went back home, she have to help her brother to take a bath and read story to him. She had no fun. If I have a day like that, I think I will probably be crazy. It's a very tired day and I couldn't imagine.

Hi Miss Lisaann, I'm very sorry that I couldn't finish the whole homework because I couldn't get on the froum these days and I saw the mail that Miss Yu post me just now. Here's what I did for the homework:

I'm also very sorry about that I would be late for the class for about 15min...

Chapter 5

1. What changes occur when Katie is ten and a half years old?

When Katie is ten and a half, her sister, Lynn, gets hurt in a ball game. From then on, Lynn’s sickness makes her usually gets fatigue easily and couldn’t go to school.

The other big change is that a girl called Amber becomes Lynn’s “first best friend” at school because Lynn becomes pretty and the most popular boy in her class likes her.

2. Who is Amber? What is she like? How does Katie react to her?

Amber is one of the popular girls in Lynn’s class. She cares her appearance a lot and, she also influences Lynn a lot. Katie doesn’t like Amber at all and she thinks Amber is "really girlie" and "stupid".

3. On Google, do the following search "shunning + Amish." Look up the second entry, "Amish shunning", and read the first two small paragraphs. Do you think this is what Katie did to Lynn?  Explain.

I’m sorry that my computer couldn’t get on Google because in Google has quit from most parts of China.

Chapter 6

1. Why is Katie upset when Lynn worries about her? What is the difference in the way Lynn worries now compared to the beginning of the novel?

Katie is upset when Lynn worries about her because the way Lynn worries shows that Lynn regards Katie as a very young baby. I think the sentence on p49 can tell the way how Lynn treats Katie at the beginning: “She (Lynn) always told me the truth and didn’t treat me as a baby.” It also shows the differences that in chapter 6, Lynn comforts Katie by telling lies – saying she knows where “Bera-Bera” is – and regards Katie as a baby; in chapter 4 Lynn tells Katie the truth and treats her as a grown-up person.

Chapter 7

1. Contrast the world of the Takeshima's with that of the Lyndon's.

The adults of Takeshimas’ family are so busy earning their money to make it seems enough for living that they seem older than their ages. Even though, they get few salaries. The fact is that their life is almost filling by working and sleeping. The children of Takeshimas’ family know how to save money and how to help their parents very well. Takeshimas lead hard life but still try their best to keep positive, especially the children.

Lyndon’s world must be much better than Takeshimas’ – in economy. Lyndon is one of the richest people in Georgia and so he wouldn’t be such in need of money like Takeshimas. He has an enormous house with a big garden. Also, according to the book, the factory workers weren’t allowed to use the bathroom in “unscheduled breaks” and Katie’s mum always has “funny smelling”. So I think the rules in the factory are severe to the workers and Lyndon is a cruel dictator.

5(1). A little boy flung the ball at Lynn, and she felt uncomfortable in next couple of days.

5(2). Amber is Lynn's first best friend, she has brown hair, brown eyes instead of blue, and she wants to be a model. And Katie is a little annoying to her.

5(3) First, google is banned. So I'm not sure about this question. And from the reading, I guess it's not, because Katie just doesn't want Lynn helps her on those problems.

6(1). Katie thinks Lynn still treated her like a kid, and it likes the way she worries about a baby. In the beginning, Lynn worries about Katie like a older sister, and in chapter 6, she just worries about Katie like a little kid.

6(2)maybe his ex-wife doesn't like he talking too much.

7(1)Takeshima's family is poor, and has a little house. Lyndon, which is the richest man in the town, he has a Cadillac, a former plantation mansion, and slaves.

7(2)She works for what the family needs. They should stay near their mom when their mom working, keep the door locked, and stay in the car. So the sleep in the car.

7(3)Katie tells her about the "thug" and the union activity. And her mom doesn't Katie to talk with that girl and say thug again.

8(1)Katie sees Lynn's face is kind of green.

8(2)Her mom took her to work, she stayed in the car and took care of her brother, then she told stories to her brother, took Sammy to sleep, and wiped the ring of bathtub. I think she can't expect about that, and if I had the day like she had in the same age, I feel terrible.

8(3)She finds that Silly's father is dead when Silly was born, and she is working herself to pay the school. It is quite unfair to a little girl, she even doesn't have her childhood.

Sally,

Your answers are quite good.  They are accurate and for the most part, your grammar is correct.  Here and there you verbs are incorrect, but it is not throughout your writing.

Good job overall.  There is part of that one sentence which does not make sense.  Try to rewrite it.

Hubert....you need to read some of the questions more carefully.  I think you understand them in terms of translation, but I think you did not read some of them carefully in terms of comprehension. You have difficulty here and there with some of the more idiomatic expressions.  Not to worry...this comes with practice.
