4th class reading assignment: Please make sure you have read the first ten pages of Lon Po Po. Please also have read chapters 3 and 4 in Ellis Island. We will start with a discussion of how Jessie's story matches or does not match what you read in Ellis Island

4th class writing assignment: Please describe what you think Jessie was thinking as she greeted Aunt Kay on Ellis Island but could not find Lou to say good bye. Focus on how she must have felt starting her new life. Was she sad or happy? Was she a little of both? What might she have been happy about? What might have made her sad?

Make  up Class: Please read 6 more pages in Lon Po Po to end on page 16.

We will also continue our discussion of prefixes, suffixes and roots and how they can enlarge your vocabulary. See below  the photo for a visual explanation of how words are formed using prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

Writing Assignment for the Make Up Class: Please describe what you think is the wolf's plan when he decides to dress up as the children's grandmother. In your writing, you should answer questions like why does he do it? What is he thinking? Does he want to be the children's friend?

For Both Classes: Please look at the photo of how prefixes, roots, and suffixes fit together to form words. Not all words are pieced together like this. But many are. So it pays to know something about prefixes, suffixes, and roots.

  • root prefix and suffix: Many--but not all-- words are like a completed puzzle that can be divided into parts.

Jessie will think: Oh, I finally get to America, and I finally see Kay. Well, where is Lou? I forgot to say good bye to him. Ok, I just hope I can see him again.

I think she was a little of both. She is happy because she arrived in America and she can earn money, and she is sad because she is so far away from her grandmother.
