Reading Assignment. Please read chapters 1 and 2 of the book Ellis Island.

 

Writing Assignment: Write a few sentences describing what "traveling in steerage" meant for new arrivals to America's shores. Where was steerage?  Why did people travel in steerage? What was life like for the immigrants (foreigners from other countries) coming to the country's shores?

 

Class Question: Does your book make it seem like Jessie traveled in steerage? Why or why not? Based on what the book says are the people below traveling in steerage class?

 

Vocabulary Review: We will  review in class as many of the words on the file I sent as time will allow.

       "Traveling in steerage" meant for new arrivals to America's shores the smelly  washroom ,crowded with about 2000 people,dirty and narrow bunk

        Steerage is near the bottom of the ship, and close to the steering equipment.

        Because the cheapest ticket were in steerage.

        They often played cards, sang, danced, told stories and practiced their English.

     "traveling in steerage" mean:You must shared two bathroom with about 300 passengers and your belongings had to fit in a narrow bunk.

      steerage was the area near the ship'bottom.It was close to the steering equipment.

       Because the cheapest tickets is for steerage.

    “traveling in steerage" meant people spend journey in the worst cabin. In there, 2000 passengers crowded together and share little fresh air and few washroom and sleep in a nerrow bunk.

    They sang songs, told stories each other, played games and practiced their English.
