Reading Assignment: Please finish the book Jacob Have I Loved, and if you get the time, read the first ten pages of Sounder.

Writing Assignment; Please come up with and post 2 sentences for each of the following:

1. personification

2. metaphor

3. simile

4. oxymoron

Ideally, I'd like you to use these literary devices to describe characters in the book, for example, "As Sara huddled in the bedroom with her family and the captain, the hurricane screamed its warning about the disaster that lay ahead."

But if that seems too difficult, your sentences can address any topic you choose, e.g. "The red light in the distance winked its warning, but I saw it too late and could not stop in time."

If all else fails, look the terms up on the web and find two interesting examples for each.  You can post your examples any time you want. But please send them to me in an e-mail as well, by Saturday morning at the latest, so I can put them into a file, and we can discuss them in class. Let me know too if it's o.k. to attach your name to the example. Make sure to label your examples, indicating personification, oxymoron, etc.

Personification

1 The Captain’s orange tomcat relaxes and wanders around at the Auntie’s house as if spending a great vacation.

2 The storm rages and roars in RassIsland, tearing off the Captain’s house.

Metaphor

1 Caroline is a demon, which dominates Sarah’s life for a long period of time.

2 The Captain suggests to Sarah, that opportunities are floating balloons, which will never come in front of her if she does not grab it.

Simile

1 When Sarah realizes that Call will marry to Caroline, it is like a rock hitting her very face.

2 Sarah is like a once caged bird getting its freedom when she leaves RassIsland for University of Maryland.

Oxymoron

1 Sarah feels a sort of strange familiarity and resemblance when she helps Essie deliver her twins.

2 Sarah’s insane grandmother has an awkward keenness about what is going on Sarah.

@ Silver When it comes to favorites, there is a lot to choose from here, but the grandmother's "awkward keenness" really wins my heart because it is so apt; clumsy and crazy as she is, she definitely knows what's going on better than anyone else. Plus oxymorons are a favorite device of mine.

These are great, everyone a winner. Thank you.
