Respond to the following on the forum about Of Mice and Men:

Had the unfortunate murder of Curley's wife's not occurred, do you think it would be possible for George and Lennie to attain their goals?  What does the killing of Lennie and Curley's wife ultimately imply about the American Dream in the novel?

Have fun writing and reading!

Shirley:

Lennie was killed Curley`s wife at last, then George was killed Lennie. If Lennie didn`t killed Curley`s wife there was no one died at last, and everyone will be alive. And nobody will want George and Lennie live them away, and nobody will didn`t like them. They might be able to have their own farm, and farming in the farm every day. But they probably of that were low. So I didn`t have a main opinion of if Lennie and Curley`s wife was alive, the Lennie and George`s dream can became true or not .Because everything is be possible.

The name of this book is called “the mice and men”, when at start as I read I didn`t know what the meaning of “mice” in this book. When I finished reading for this book, I think Lennie, Curley`s wife and some other person it just like “mice”, mice worked in the fields, they can`t do anything that they want, they work for their master. In America, they government and people was spread America dream, it means if have a dream and you pay so many time and energy(not money) on it ,you will can success .So, at that time so many people was strive for their dream. In this book, they all have their own dream for their life, they work hard and they pay lots of time and energy on it, but at last didn`t get anything back. I think they author want to say, some dream can be true, but not all of them. Because you must have impact of whom you are? Where you lived? What is you dream? America dream probably happened , but not for everyone.

Rick:

From my perspective, it cannot be possible for George and Lennie attain their goals. To be specific, we all know about that Lennie is a careless person. Lennie always gets into troubles. If Lennie does not kill curler's wife, he will make other troubles. He has already killed a dog. We can imagine that he may kill another person instead of Curley's wife because other people will blame to his mistake.
To answer the  second question, I think that the American dream in the novel shows us the Americans believe that they can realize their dreams through their efforts. However, from the death of Lennie and Curley's wife, we can also learn that there are still discriminations and unfair treatments in America although the government has encouraged people to respond the America Dream.

James:

MY OPINION OF THE AMERICAN DREAM ACCORDING TO THE BOOK

At the end of the book, Lennie killed Curley's wife by mistake and he die for it. The dream that he and George had was also ended. If he didn't kill C's wife, will their dream come true? It is sure that the answer is NO. During that difficult time, It's nearly impossible to keep oneself have enough food to eat. And maybe even people will have a big fight only for one job. George and Lennie are only two workers on a farm. If they kept on staying in the farm. C must do many bad things to let them go away. But if they leave for a better job, they might even lose their own job.So although G and L are hard-working, they won't make their dream come true.

Back to the end of the story,about the American Dream, since 1776, many Americans believe that as long as the unremitting efforts to struggle will get a better life. I think it means people must through his diligence and courage and creative and determined to prosperity, not to depend on others. But, IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, I think it is a sign of very self-conceit. I think this kind of spirit is not good. As everyone knows, the founder of Alibaba--Ma Yun. He used to be a poor people, he was helped by a Japanese called Sun Zhengyi several times. I want to ask if he follows the American Dream, will he success in the end?

And there is another example. During the economic crisis, many company that produce milk have many tons of milk cannot  be sold out. But they poured out them all intead of giving them to the poor. I think this is a sign of selfish. Of course, they also need money to live, but the poor also need to live. I don't think the poor could still insist their American Dream during that time. This kind of spirit is different from the spirit that Chinese believe in. We believe in Zhong Yong. It means moderation. We ask for help when we need the other's help. If we are poor , we can ask for money to use, with their money, and we finally success, we can return it. It is very simple and Chinese live with this kind of opinion for hundreds of years. {Thank you, teacher. For listening to some rude words against your belief ^_^}
