For Homework: Please finish reading the book.

Then, post responses on the forum to the following questions:

  1. How does Sara change throughout the story? Give examples with page numbers.
  2. What does Sara’s metaphor about stairs mean on p. 128?

If you have time, please post a response to one of your classmate’s answers.

Also, please translate the paragraph on p. 128 beginning with “A picture came into her mind of the laughing, curly-headed man…” into Chinese (this is Sara’s metaphor about stairs). You do not need to post your translation on the forum.

Don’t forget to be prepared with a favorite quote /part from each chapter for next class!

Have fun!

1) After Charlie was missing, Sara is forced to see her life--and everyone around her--in a whole new way. (On p126) "Joe Melby?Your great and terrible enemy?""He is not my enemy, Wanda. He is one of the nicest people I know."The biggest change for Sara was her opinion about Joe. Once Sara thought Joe was just a thief, but slowly, Sara saw clearly that Joe was actually an upright person. So I think throughout the story, Sara may draw a conclusion is that she won't judge a person before you really understand him.

2) sorry, I think your page numbers don't match mine. I didn't find the sentence.

I think in these chapters there are several changes.

The first one is that in the beginning of the book, Sara did not care about anything except her appearance. However, when she knew that Charlie was missing, she spent all the effort to find him. And also when she knew that Charlie was near her, though she was totally tired (p.114), she did not give up finding Charlie (p115), as if Charlie was the best ruby of her life. She eventually realized that in her whole life, there was not only herself, so she should pay more attention to the people near her.

Secondly, formerly Sara thought that Charlie was a burden to her, and always complained about him. However, when Charlie was found again, she just comforted him rather than blame him, as she found out that actually Charlie has already been a part of her body, and she cannot abandon him in the rest of her life. (P115)

Thirdly, Sara wanted to be like swam, maybe because she wanted to have beautiful appearance like swam and she wanted be free like swam without caring so much about Charlie. However, when she found Charlie at last, she did not feel in that way any more, since she knew that every thing in her life must be cherished. (p125)

The last one, it is so hard for Sara to admit her fault before, but finally she can explain the real situation to her sister and accept the fault. She realized that everybody make mistake. It is common, but it is also important to accept that. (p126)

From my perspective, these steps have different meanings. Maybe steps are the real life of every people, and also steps mean to some obstacles in people’s life. Steps are uneven and huge. It is hard for people to have a thought to cross them, because it seems to be impossible. Or sometimes even though you have courage to go though them, the process is so tough, even you will get hurt or eventually you cannot succeed. However, life is a challenging course. If you persist crossing the steps, these troubles, you must make it finally, and after that you will receive a lot of experience, so that your life will be at the higher level. Just like Sara, through charlie’s missing, she grew up a lot, but it is different for her dad. He still could not therapy his scare of past, he just sat on the steps and never moved.
