Please read p. 118-154 (Chapters 20-24) of The Westing Game

Write a response to the following and send it to my email at least one hour before class starts (250 word minimum response):

  • Many of The Westing Game's characters are trapped by the way their bodies look--beauty, ordinariness, or a disability; so it's their struggle to define themselves outside of their appearances that makes them who they really are.  Discuss this with specific examples of characters and how they try to define themselves.

Translate the excerpt on p.145 in Ch. 23 beginning “O beautiful for spacious skies…” ending “From sea to shining sea.”  Translate it into Chinese and then back into English.  This may be a challenge, because most of it is an old fashioned song (called "America the Beautiful").

Lola's Homework:

When people are full of greed, they couldn't find out and understand themselves or others truly and deeply. Most of the characters in this book firmly wanted to win the game and got the money. So they used others of their own ends. Cheating, lying, these things always happened in the game. And Angela is a victim in this game because nobody really understood what she wanted and who she was. Everyone only thought she was beautiful and was going to married and that's all.But Angela defined herself as a totally different person, and she wanted others to see who she really was. After struggled in the deep of her heart, she finally decided to make a difference. But unfortunately she did it in a wrong way. In order not to get married , she set a bomb and disfigured herself because she thought outside looking was a obstacle to her. I think she was a poor person because she wanted others attention too much ,just like her partner. In some senses, they were pathetic.

Janet's Homework:

Beauty: Angela has beautiful face, and her mother want her to marry with Doctor Denton, so she define herself a good wife and a beautiful woman. But she didn't want to marry so she make a bomb, she wanted to control her destiny herself. In my opinion, she define herself a free woman.
Ordinariness: I think it's Turtle, because she is a normal girl, and she always make herself ordinary. She doesn't like her life, so she started to put her money into the stock market and she became a business woman, she changed her life!
Disability:Chris can't walk and speak clearly, so he define himself a disabled man, he didn't know he had ability to be a better man. In the end, he tried to cured his disease, and he became a perfessor,he taught ornithology in a university.
