For homework, read to the page 56 of Of Mice and Men, or if you have a kindle, you can end after they are talking about Curley's wife: "'Andy's in San Quentin right now on account of a tart,' said George." (By the way, San Quentin is a state prison, so it means that Andy cheated with someone else's wife and ended up in prison.)

Also, please write an essay (at least 150 words) about the way the characters in the play communicate with each other.  Do they say what they mean?  Think about what each character really wants and feels--do they normally come right out and say it?  Does George tell Lennie he loves him, Curley's wife tell her husband she is bored, Candy tell everyone he is sad about his dog?

Here are the words we discussed during class.  For next week, please make a list of phrases and words that you couldn't make sense of in the dictionary.

Bunker = the house where all of the men stay who help on the ranch

Handy = Curley likes to use his hands to fight and uses them well

Lightweight = Curley doesn't weigh very much, but he is a good, quick fighter and did it professionally

the ring = the boxing ring, or the area where you fight

Scrap = a fight

Punk = a young, reckless guy

Got the Eye = Curley's wife is looking at men other than her husband

Tart = a woman who is a cheater

Have fun!

Lola's Homework:

In this book we can easily find out that the characters are certainly not telling what they really think and feel. When Carlson wanted to kill Candy's old dog, from Candy's words we can know that this dog has been fed by Candy for a long time, and he refused to kill it in the deep of his heart. But at that situation even Slim didn't help him, and also from Carlson's words he realized that maybe at its age death is a better choice, so he has no choice but to indirectly killed his dog. And just like George and other workers, they are not telling the things they wanted to say. In my opinion I think that all these things are because that dark time and bad situation. People like George who worked for others were not treated well, and the most important thing is that they didn't have the right to decide their own life. So some words were hard for them to say out.  I think it is also the main part that this novel wants to show us.

Janet's Homework:

Slim: S, George: G, Curley:C.
S: Hey, your partner is really a nice fella, isn't he?
G: Yep. He is really strong.
S: I agree with you. But there is onething I feel strange, why you came to find a job with that stronge guy?
G: Well, I know him because I knoe his aunt, I'm just taking care of him fot his kindhearted aunt. Let talk about other things. Do you know Curley's wife? She is a really wierd woman, I think. She always says she has a boring husband. What a strange woman she is! Whose wife always says that she has a boring husband! I was really puzzled.
S: Me too. She often makes me feel very frivolous. Just be far from her to protect yourself. I think you should remind your strong friend not to be confused by her!
G: Yep, I'll do it. Stop talking! Curley's around there!(Curley was walking here.)
C: Do you guys see my wife?
S and G: Nope, she never walked by here.

Shirley's Homework:

I think not every one in the book talk about what they really want to show to the people. There are many reasons why they do that. It may because of the situation, or maybe they don't want the people hurt by their true thought, it also may because of they are not the people who are very brave to say their really thought. Like Lennie and George, George cares about Lennie very much, he always help Lennie with his problem. We know that Lennie has something wrong with his brain, so maybe he can't feel love from George, so maybe George thinks it is useless to tell Lennie, so he choose silence. And also we read about Curley's wife. She don't want to tell Curly the truth, it may because she think Curley won't care about her feelings, so she also choose silence and lies. Why Candy can't tell others he is sad about his dogs? Because no one cares about that. Everyone think is none of their businesses. Although Candy tell everyone one, but it's useless, his dog can't back, it's gone. Candy think it's better for him to keep silence and forget this sad thing, as quick as possible. So why a people choose silence, it has many reasons, may because of love and feelings or because of the situation.
