Post responses on the forum to the following questions:

  1. How does Sara feel responsible for Charlie? Is she resentful and annoyed? Is she happy about it? How would you feel if you were Sara?
  2. Why do you think self-acceptance and self-understanding are important? How do these two aspects affect Sara, Wanda, and Charlie throughout the story?

Then, respond to one of your classmate’s posts.

Also, translate the first paragraph on p.43 into Chinese. You do not need to post your translation on the forum, but instead be prepared to translate your work back into English during next class. We will see how natural your translation sounds.

1.Sara feels responsible for Charlie because she is the one who takes care of Charlie. In her mind, she is simalar to Charlie's parent and a parent will feel responsible for his or her chiled when they are missing.

2.I think self acceptance and self understanding is important because they make you confident. It was those things who made this story because without those things, the hole thing won't happen, they will just stay in home.

1.Sara feels responsible for Charlie by taking him to the swan lake when

Wanda had some fun without Charlie, she respected his right to have fun just like  normal people. She asked for Mary's help when Charlie was missing, she went to the swan lake and the hill to find him when her sister did nothing, etc..

I can't tell whether Sara was annoyed or happy about it, I think she was not annoyed or happy, she felt pity and sympathy for Charlie. If I were Sara, I would feel the same just like Sara.

2. Self-acceptance and self-understanding are important because they decide what you think about yourself and what others will think about you. And you will act just like what you think, because they are the standards of how you live your life.

They make Sara a more mature and more responsible girl. They make Wanda a popular and attractive girl who is good at social communication. They make Charlie a poor boy who always need some help. I think they make these 3 characters different kinds of angles, they have different degrees and characters, but something in common will bond them into a round angle, because their differences will complete each other.

In general, self-acceptance and self-understanding made it the whole story.

Basically agreed.
But I think you didn't really answer the first question.
And I agree with your point that It was those things who made this story because without those things, the hole thing won't happen, they will just stay in home. But I think self-acceptance and self-understanding include both good or bad images, so I wonder whether these two aspects can make people confident.

1   Sara feel responsible for Charlie because Charlie is her own brother, and she took care of him all the time. She is always the person who protected Charlie. So when he was missing, she felt self-accusation. Yesterday she took Charlie to see the swans. She should have seen that Charlie likes those swans and didn’ t want to leave.

I’m not sure if she is really resentful and annoyed or not. But I think, more or less, she must be resentful and annoyed. She couldn’t be happy about it. Maybe she is angry about Charlie, that he run out by himself and let everybody worry about him. Or maybe she could be angry of herself.

And if I were Sara, I will be angry and worry about Charlie.

2   I think self-acceptance and self-understanding are important because  it can make you think and introspection, then you can do it better. If there is some problems that bothers you all the time, you think about it any time, you cry, you fell angry all the time, it won’t make any change.

I think this make Sara an mature girl, it make Wanda an attractive girl, and it tells Charlie not to self-abasement.

Hey Bob,

On point #2, can you please elaborate a little more on "the whole thing won't happen, they will just stay in home?"  In other words, how does "self-acceptance" or "self-understanding" make the story?

Separately, a few grammar mistakes to correct.
1) It was those things that make this story, not "who"
2) the whole thing, not the "hole" thing
3) you need a transition word between "the whole thing won't happen" and "they will just stay in home"
4) stay home is sufficient, not "stay in home."

Hi Jimmy,

It is true that self-acceptance encompasses good and bad images. And I do believe by accepting both, as no one is perfect, it gives you or anyone the confidence to be the real self and hence it builds a person's confidence.

Hi Sally,

A few corrections I'd like to bring to your attention to improve your writing.

1) If I were Sara, I would be angry and worried about Charlie.
2) It can make you think and introspective.
3) you feel angry
4) I think this makeSara a mature girl.
