Dear Class,

For homework please:

1. Read Chapters 6-10 of Charlotte’s Web.

2. Consider the following questions, which we will discuss next class. To prepare, please write your thoughts on the forum (3 sentences minimum for each question). Then, respond to at least one of your classmate’s posts.

- Do you think Fern really can hear the animals? Or do you think Mrs. Arable is right and that Fern is pretending to hear the animals?

- What do you think Charlotte will do to help Wilbur? How will she fulfill her promise that she’ll keep the farmers from killing Wilbur?

3. Post two discussion questions you would like to share next class about Ch. 6-10.

4. Choose three words that you found challenging in this reading. Record the page number, context sentence, and definition of each word. Then, write your own sentence using each word.

5. Translate the paragraph below, which is from the end of chapter 8, beginning with “Just the same, I do worry about her…” into Chinese.
"Just the same, I do worry about her," replied Mrs. Arable. "I think I shall ask Dr. Dorian about her the next time I see him. He loves Fern almost as much as we do, and I want him to know how queerly she is acting about that pig and everything. I don't think it's normal. You know perfectly well animals don't talk."

1. Yes,I think Fern can really hear the animals because she heard Charlotte's speech when the goslings were born. If she can't hear the animals, how did she know about Charlottes's words? Also, she knew what the animals want?

2. I think Charlotte will deceive Mr. and Mrs. Zuckerman or someone who wants to kill Wilbur with her web. Maybe she can make her web into words and warns people that Wilbur can't be killed.

3.

  • Why did the old sheep tell Wilbur that Mr. Zuckerman will kill Wilbur?
  • Why didn't the goose tell Wilbur that he will be killed on Christmas?

4.

  • gratified (page-58, the third last sentence)

The seller is gratified about the price.

  • consideration (page-61, the third sentence)

After the consideration, the house owner agreed to sell his house as ten million dollars.

  • compunction (page-61, the fourth sentence)

The prisoner had no compunction in doing what he thought is right.
