Hi Class,

Please read p. 39-78 (Chapters 8-13) of The Westing Game.

Please consider the following and respond on the forum:

Predicting Character Traits.Sometimes people’s names give away clues about who they are, especially in stories. Write your first impression about each of these characters and how you predict they will act in the story: Turtle, Barney Northrup, Berthe Crow, Sydelle Pulaski, James Hoo, Angela Wexler, Theo Theodorakis, Samuel Westing, Judge J.J. Ford, Flora Baumbach, Sandy McSouthers.

Think about your name. Without knowing you at all, what would someone predict your personality would be like based only on your name?

Research the author, Ellen Raskin. Be prepared to share what you leaned in class next week. We will discuss Raskin’s motivation to write The Westing Game. Check out: http://ccbc.education.wisc.edu...hors/raskin/main.htm

Begin your detective journal to write clues and make predictions. We will share these predictions at the beginning of each class.

Translate the excerpt on p.58 of Ch. 10 beginning “The judge had hoped to take the heiress…” ending “...paternal side her maiden name would be Westing.”

Important Memo: Please continue to infuse newly learnt words into your posts and daily conversations to master these seemingly difficult words. Lastly, our class discussions are always rich, but let's aim higher to produce more thought provoking responses

Derica's homework:

Turtle: a brave girl who had courage to take that bet, she stepped in to the Westing house and found out the corpse.

Barney Northrup: the delivery boy who sent the letters to all these people, he was knowing about this house very well, I think he was a mysterious person that I need to analyze after reading.

Berthe Crow: the cleaning woman. She was severe and rigid. I think she doesn't have the significant relationship to this murder.

Sydelle Pulaski: she was a wide-hipped woman. No one was paying attention on her. It was quiet strange that people didn’t pay attention to a big-size woman, every one were thinking she was a crippled and a freak. She loved painting, she painted her crutch with purple strikes.

Angela Wexler: a elegant girl. She was the proud daughter of Ms. Wexler, she was following her mother’s instructions all the times, even her marriage.

Theodoerakis : the coffee shop owner.

Sameul westing: the dead rich man who organize the game for his relatives, and the goal of this game was to win, so that the winner could get lots of money. I think he was tricky, because even he dead he had to let his relatives to find out the murder and using such a unserious way.

Judge J.J Ford: the judge. He was the man that everyone respected, he read through Mr. Westing’s will and made people shocked.

Flora Baumbach: the dressmaker. she was taking responsibility of Angela’s wedding dress, she was careless to drop her pins and made Ms. Wexler misunderstood that she prick her daughter.

Sandy McSouthers: the door man. He was stocky man and a cheerful fellow. He was friendly with those curious children, when they asked him a question about the mysterious house, he always told them.

My name is Derica, this was a name that I found in the English-naming-website. I don’t think it have any special meaning. The only thing that I could tell was that when I told people my name, they generally got confused at first. They would ask me how to pronounce it, and what does it mean? Well, sometimes I don't know how to reply, so most time I just said “just call it whatever you want, it wasn’t really matter  because I will know that you are calling me when you say it , since there will not have the second person that have same name with me.”

Hi Derica,

You did a wonderful job summarizing each character's personality. Please revisit the assignment instructions to fully grasp what was required for this week's assignments about making predictions about each character based on their names. On a positive note, you did well backgrounding your name and how people react on seeing and hearing it. However, you were required to make predictions about what people might think your personality maybe if they did not know you and only saw your name. Again, you did a great job summarizing the characters' personalities, but you missed the main purpose of the assignment. Lastly, continue to push your writing by interjecting new words into your responses.
