Hello Everyone!

My name is Lynn and I will be your 8th grade C instructor. I'm an incoming junior (3rd year) at Brown University. I'm very excited to be reading and discussing all these books with you for the next few months!

Our first book will be 1984 by George Orwell, a very classic book. Please also come prepared to class with TWO DISCUSSION QUESTIONS of your OWN. Each one of you will be leading your own discussion questions with the whole class.

Also,I'd like you to consider the following discussion questions as you read the first 48 pages of the book. We will be discussing these questions IN ADDITION to the ones you each bring to class.

1. Why is keeping a diary a crime, and why does the main character WANT to do it?

2. What is the environment and living conditions like at Oceania? (Describe the environment that the main character lives in, and thinking about the reasons behind these living conditions)
