Revised Reading Assignment: I was thinking about how solemn and miserable everyone seemed  yesterday in preparation for testing next week, and I'm going to postpone the start of Of Mice and Men for one week. For next week, just make sure you have closely and carefully read all of Chapter 12 in The Outsiders. We didn't get to it this week, and   there is a lot to discuss. I'm also going to do a vocabulary review of words we've gone over such as grim, gallant, solemn, allusion etc.

For the writing assignment, please explain which of The Outsiders you think you would most like to have for a friend and why. Please open like this "If I were to have one of the gang members in The Outsiders as my friend, I would ...." *

See that phrase "If I were..." It's very common when a writer wants to describe some experience that is impossible or unlikely, for example: "If I were to earn a million dollars, I would fly around the world"; "If I were able to stop eating sweets, I would be a thin person." "If I were on vacation, I would be sleeping now."

* I'd choose Darry.

If I were to have one of the gang members in The Outsiders as my friend, I would choose Johnny. He seems like a kid brother, that makes him funny to me so I would be happy to play with him. And he is very brave at the crucial times. When his friend, Ponyboy was almost killed by the Socs in the pool, he became very brave that he killed the Socs and saved Ponyboy from them. When some children were dying in the fire in the church which Ponyboy and Johnny thought they started it, Johnny was also very brave that he went into the church and saved the children from the fire, for his atonement. So he is also a kind boy. So I would choose Johnny to be my friend if I were to have one of the gang members in The Outsiders as my friend.

Here is Alice's response to the assignment:

If I were to have one of the gang members in The Outsiders as my friend, I would choose Pony boy. First, he is kind, when his friend killed a person to save him, he felt sorrowful for that boy. Secondly, even he had been bully by others before, he is not angry with those guys, I always admire him. Well, the others of the gang all have great characteristics, I really like the “The Outsiders” book, it shows the real act of people in life, and I’m going to read it again.
