Reading Assignment: Reading Assignment: Read pp.27-77 in Out of the Dust
Writing Assignment: I've revised it. I think the other one we discussed in class was too hard. Below is the passage we read in class. Please open your own writing by using a line or two from the passage, for instance, "In the epilogue* to A Long Walk to Water, Salva Dut offers advice to his readers. He tells...."
Then use some kind of transition to indicate that Dut speaks from real experience. Finally describe the experience from his life that illustrates his point.
I think this assignment calls for a transitional sentence, something like "And Salva Dut is a man who knows whereof he speaks" or "Mr. Dut certainly has had enough experience on which to base his advice." That transitional sentence should follow your opening statement about the advice Salva offers. Then follow the transition with a description of Salva's experiences to show his advice is based on what he actually lived. Write me if you have questions.
Passage
I overcame all the difficult situations of my past because of the hope and perseverance that I had. I would have not made it without these two things. To young people, I would like to say: Stay calm when things are hard or not going right with you. You will get through it when you persevere instead of quitting. Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope.
*epilogue is a final note in book or movie saying how things turned out
