Reading Assignment:  pages 21-31 in The Hundred Penny Box

Writing Assignment:  Aunt Dew clings to her hundred-penny box because it is filled with her memories. For almost everyone, there are certain objects or places that make us remember people or events that were very important to us.

Write a paragraph describing the object or place that you consider really important because it holds a lot of memories for you. It could be a book, a room, a musical instrument, a strip of beach or a mountaintop. It is whatever you say it is.  Just make sure to describe it as fully as you can. Then explain why it holds a special place in your heart. ("Hold a place in your heart" is a common expression in English. Whatever "holds a special place in one's heart" is considered VERY important)

My grandmother’s house holds a lot of memories for me. When I was a little boy, my grandma took care of me at her house. I lived there until I went to kindergarten. When I was an elementary school student, I went to my grandma’s house every weekend. My grandma is a good cook, she often cooks some yummy food when we go here. In summer and winter vacations, my cousins and aunts and uncles will go there, too. I played with my cousins there during those times. In Chinese New Year, we eat hotpot and many other delicious dishes. After the meal, we play mah-jongg. That is my favorite time of the year. My grandmother will make bamboo-leaf rice dumplings (Zongzi) on the Dragon Boat Festival. The rice dumplings are very delicious. There are lots of food stands and drink shops near my grandma’s house, so I can buy some sneaks there. My grandma’s house is very important for me, I really like the environment there and I always have a good time there!

@ Shirley  Well, you have chosen one of my favorite books. While all three, or four, if you count The Hobbit are much loved by me, my most loved is The Hobbit with Bilbo Baggins and the golem. So I share your enthusiasm.  And you are right, a particular book can hold a special place in one's heart. The very thought of it can evoke (bring up) pleasurable memories of reading it.

Your mother is a very wise woman because, for decades now, American students have been reading the The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy (a series with three parts--you probably know that but just in case).

@Alfonso

This is very nice. Your description made me want to visit your grandmother too. I was particularly interested in those bamboo-leaf rice dumplings.  I like, too, the specific and concrete detail, for instance, when you say "mahjong" instead of the more general "games."  That opening sentence is quite beautiful, and I like your use of the verb "holds," which suggests the house is a container of memories, all of them good ones. Well done. See you tomorrow.

A picture of a Gene laboratory of future is hanging on the wall in my room. When I looked at it every time, I always remembered that I spent four weeks to finish this great works.
Last year, there was a competition of science drawing, my art teacher hoped all my classmates to join this competition. At last, four students’ drawing drafts and mine were chosen by teacher. My picture was about a gene laboratory in the future. My art teacher liked it, because it was full of imagination and originality. But our pictures were only drafts, so other four classmates and I had to spend lots of time to finish our pictures. We couldn’t take pictures home, we only could use twenty minutes break time at school everyday to draw.
     When we started to draw our pictures, we were very positive and went to art classroom to draw everyday. One week passed, no one wanted to draw any more, so art teacher asked:" Do you want to finish your pictures?" My four classmates said that they wanted to give up, but I promised to keep drawing my picture.
      During four weeks later, I went to art classroom to improve my picture in break time everyday. Finally, I have done a great job of my picture. The picture was more perfect than I ever have imaged. When I took the picture to my mom, my mom was very surprised of it, she almostly couldn’t believe that I have done it myself.
I was very happy, and I have won a prize, I also was happy that I could try hard to finish the picture well. This picture gave me a principle: No paid no gained.

This is my picture of gene laboratory in the future

I'm going to have to take a screen shot and post the drawing because the picture, which is wonderful, won't cut and paste so I can copy it here. You will be amazed.

For almost everyone, there are certain objects or places that make us remember people or events that were very important to us. Maybe it is a room, an old book , a present , some photos etc. Sometimes it is expensive, wonderful, or beautiful, but probably it just old , ugly and inexpensive . It hold a place in your heart.

For me , the important things is an old recorder which color is black and white . Maybe you will say: “Why it is important?” Now let me tell you the oldest story ——When I see it , I must remember this story.

Long long ago, a little girl was born in a white-white room. When she cried in her mother’s hand , her family was happily and used the recorder to record this loudly voice. Yes , the girl was me. Then I grow up with father’s laughter, mama’s hug, my old sister’s scream and my grandmother’s interesting stories .And the , it almost recorded everything in my sweet childhood.

Now ,when I want to heard something which is forgotten in my heart from there , I always open it and listen.
